Chapter 6 - The Fall

Ethan didn't shout.
He didn't rush forward.
He didn't curse.
He walked out from the shadowed archway of the foyer where he had been standing for the last thirty seconds. He was still wearing his dark tailored suit from his flight, his tie slightly loosened, his briefcase held in his left hand.
His face was completely devoid of emotion. It was a pale, sculpted mask of absolute, terrifying stillness—the face of a man who had just witnessed something so monstrous that normal human anger was insufficient to express it.
Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. Color drained from her face so rapidly that she looked like a corpse standing in the sunlight.
"E-Ethan..." she stammered, her voice high, thin, and trembling. "Ethan... I... you don't understand. She was being disrespectful. She was trying to turn Noah against me... she called herself his mother—"
Ethan set his briefcase down on the marble console table near the doorway. The soft thud of the leather against the wood sounded like a executioner's block falling.
He ignored Vanessa completely.
He walked past her as if she were made of thin air, stepping directly toward Grace and Noah.
Noah was sobbing hysterically, his tiny arms wrapped tightly around Grace’s knees. Grace had dropped to her knees on the rug, pulling Noah against her chest, her arms enveloping him while her eyes remained fixed on Ethan.
Ethan knelt beside them.
He didn't look at Grace’s face yet. He reached out and wrapped his large arms around both of them, pulling Grace and Noah together into his chest.
He felt Grace trembling. He felt the heat radiating from her left cheek where Vanessa’s hand had landed.
"I'm here," Ethan whispered into Grace’s hair, his voice deep, gravelly, and shaking with an internal earthquake. "I've got you. I've got both of you."
Noah buried his face into Ethan’s neck, his small body shaking with sobs. "Daddy... bad lady hit Mama Grace! Bad lady hit her!"
"I know, baby," Ethan murmured, kissing his son’s temple. "I know. Daddy saw."
Ethan gently eased Noah out of Grace’s arms, holding the boy against his hip as he stood up. He reached out his free hand to Grace.
Grace looked at his hand. Then she looked up into his eyes.
The raw tenderness she saw in Ethan’s face made tears spill over her eyelashes, tracing hot tracks down her reddened cheek. She reached up, took his hand, and allowed him to pull her smoothly to her feet.
Ethan kept his arm anchored securely around Grace’s waist, supporting her, anchoring her to his side.
Then, slowly, deliberately, Ethan turned to face Vanessa.
Vanessa had taken three steps back toward the glass doors, her hands trembling violently, her eyes wide with terror.
"Ethan, please," she begged, tears of panic welling in her eyes. "I lost my temper! She pushed me! You know how stressed I’ve been with the wedding! I’m so sorry... I’ll apologize to her! I’ll pay her a bonus—"
"The wedding is over," Ethan said.
His voice was not loud. It was a low, flat rumble that carried through the room like cold iron.
Vanessa blinked, as if she hadn't processed the words. "What?"
"The wedding is over, Vanessa," Ethan repeated, looking at her as if she were a unpleasant stain on his floor. "Our engagement is terminated. You have fifteen minutes to collect your personal items from the master bedroom and leave my property."
"Ethan, no!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a desperate step toward him. "You can't end our marriage over a nanny! We’re getting married in three weeks! My father has already invited two hundred people! The deposits have been paid!"
"If you are still on my property in sixteen minutes," Ethan said, his eyes locking onto hers with a cold, ruthless intensity that made her blood run cold, "I will have my private security detail physically drag you into the street. I will file criminal assault charges against you with the Miami-Dade Police Department before noon. And I will personally ruin your father's private equity firm by pulling every single institutional dollar Cole Dynamics has invested with him."
Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. "You... you would destroy my family over a servant?!"
"She is not a servant," Ethan said, his arm tightening around Grace’s waist, pulling her closer against his side. "She is the woman who raised my son. She is the heart of this house. And you just made the biggest mistake of your life."
"Ethan!"
"Fourteen minutes," Ethan said, checking his watch.
Vanessa looked at Ethan’s impenetrable face. She looked at Noah, who was glaring at her from his father’s shoulder with pure childish hatred. She looked at Grace, who stood quietly beside Ethan, supported by the arm of one of the most powerful men in the country.
Realization finally crashed over Vanessa Hart like a ton of bricks.
There was no negotiation. There was no apology that would save her. She had not just slapped a nanny; she had struck the woman Ethan Cole loved.
Vanessa let out a strangled, humiliated sob, turned on her high heels, and fled down the hallway toward the master suite, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.
Ethan didn't watch her go.
He turned his head and looked down at Grace.
His hand reached up, his long, warm fingers gently cupping her right jawline, his thumb rising to brush softly against the bright red mark on her left cheek.
"Does it hurt?" he asked softly, his voice breaking with unbearable emotion.

Grace looked into his dark, grey eyes, seeing three years of buried grief, hidden affection, and fierce protection burning there all at once.
"Not anymore," she whispered.
