Chapter 3 - The First Illusion Falls

Ethan scrambled to his feet, leaning heavily against the pillar, his breath ragged. "You... you can't cancel my event! You have no power here! This is my company! I own Cole Urban Development!"
Marcus Hale looked at Ethan as if he were an annoying insect buzzing around his ear. "Do you, Ethan?"
Marcus turned to the silver-haired man beside him. "Arthur, display the records."
The silver-haired man—Arthur Vance, senior legal counsel for the Hale family—pulled out a remote and tapped a button. The massive digital screens behind the stage, which had been displaying the shiny 3D rendering of the $340 million Riverfront Project, suddenly flickered and turned blue.
A moment later, complex corporate organizational charts appeared across every monitor in the room.
"Six years ago," Alexander Hale said, stepping toward the stage, "when you started Cole Urban Development with seventeen thousand dollars in debt, Claire came to us. She asked us to support your dream. But she knew your pride. She knew you would never accept a handout from her family."
Ethan stared at the screen, his eyes widening in horror as he recognized the names of the holding companies on the charts.
"Apex Global Investments," Alexander read aloud. "Beacon Capital. Northstar Holdings. These are the three primary seed investors that provided ninety percent of your initial capital over the last six years. They provided your lines of credit. They backed your bank loans. They guaranteed your completion bonds with the City of Chicago."
Alexander turned to look Ethan dead in the eye.
"Apex, Beacon, and Northstar are fully owned subsidiaries of Hale Family Office," Alexander stated calmly. "You do not own seventy percent of Cole Urban Development, Ethan. You own eight percent. My sister, through a private trust established on her wedding day, owns sixty-two percent. You have been an employee running her company for six years."
The ballroom erupted into hushed, panicked murmurs.
Investors who had spent the night sucking up to Ethan suddenly stepped away from him as if he were radioactive.
Ethan’s mind spun out of control. "No... no, that's impossible! I signed those corporate papers! My name is on the deed!"
"Your name is on the operational manager line," Arthur Vance corrected smoothly. "Which gave you authority to run daily operations, subject to board oversight. And as of four minutes ago, the board—consisting of Claire Hale and representatives from Hale Family Office—has held an emergency vote."
Arthur pulled a document from his folder and held it up. "Ethan Cole has been officially terminated as CEO of Cole Urban Development for gross misconduct, breach of fiduciary duty, and moral turpitude. Your access to all company assets, accounts, and properties has been revoked effective immediately."
Ethan looked at Vanessa, his face pale. Vanessa looked horrified, backing away from Ethan toward the exit.
"Vanessa!" Ethan shouted, reaching for her. "Vanessa, help me explain this! The Riverfront deal is ours! We signed the letters of intent yesterday!"
Vanessa looked at the screens, then at the formidable Hale brothers, and finally at Ethan. She realized in an instant that the man she had hitched her wagon to was not a rising real estate mogul—he was a glorified middle manager who had just been wiped out.
"Don't touch me, Ethan," Vanessa said coldly, her voice sharp. "I had no idea your business structure was built on fraud."
"Fraud?!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking. "You were in my bed an hour ago telling me we were going to own Chicago!"
"And now she's unemployed," Marcus Hale said coldly.
Marcus gestured to two security officers standing near the back doors. "Miss Grant, as of this moment, you are suspended pending an immediate forensic audit of all acquisitions made under your tenure at Cole Urban Development. If we find a single dollar misallocated during your eleven-month affair with Ethan Cole, my legal team will file criminal fraud charges against you before the night is over."

Vanessa’s face went entirely white. She dropped her champagne glass, which shattered against the marble floor, before spinning on her heel and practically running out of the ballroom.
Ethan watched his mistress abandon him without a second thought. But his nightmare was only beginning.
