Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Three months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured gardens of the Hale family estate in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The ocean breeze blew softly off the Atlantic, carrying the sweet scent of saltwater and blooming hydrangeas across the expansive stone terrace.
Claire stood near the edge of the terrace, looking out at the blue water.
She wore a simple, elegant yellow summer dress that comfortably accommodated her growing belly. At five months pregnant, her bump was now clearly visible, round and healthy. The red bruise that had marked her cheek three months ago was long gone, replaced by a radiant, healthy glow.
Behind her, the terrace was filled with the sound of quiet conversation and warm laughter.
Her brothers were gathered around a large wooden table. Gabriel was showing Marcus a new satellite defense proposal on his tablet, while Alexander was on the phone, finalizing the legal dissolution of Ethan Cole’s remaining corporate assets.
All of Ethan's stolen funds had been recovered from Vanessa’s offshore accounts and returned to the employee pension fund. Cole Urban Development had been completely absorbed into Hale Real Estate, with its staff retained under fair corporate management.
Ethan Cole himself was currently sitting in a federal remand facility awaiting trial, his bail denied due to being a extreme flight risk. His high-priced defense attorney had dropped him after Ethan was unable to pay his legal retainers. Vanessa Grant had accepted a plea bargain, agreeing to testify against Ethan in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Neither of them had tried to contact Claire since that night in Chicago. A permanent restraining order ensured they never would.
Alexander ended his phone call and walked over to Claire, setting a glass of fresh iced lemonade on the stone railing beside her.
"How is my future nephew doing today?" Alexander asked gently, leaning his elbows on the railing beside her.
Claire smiled softly, resting her hand over her baby. "He's very active today. I think he likes the sea breeze."
"Doctor says he's growing perfectly," Alexander noted, his eyes filled with warmth. "The nursery in the main house is almost finished. Marcus had a custom crib shipped from Italy."
Claire laughed softly, shaking her head. "You three are going to spoil this baby rotten before he's even born."
"That is our duty as uncles," Marcus said, walking up behind them with a warm smile. "We missed six years of taking care of you, Claire. We have a lot of making up to do."
Claire turned to look at her brothers—the three powerful, fiercely protective men who had stepped into the dark storm of her life without hesitation and demolished every lie that had threatened to destroy her.
She reached out, taking Marcus’s hand with one side and Alexander’s with the other, as Gabriel joined them near the railing.

"You don't have to make up for anything," Claire said softly, her eyes shining with genuine happiness. "You saved me."
"We just reminded the world who you are, Claire," Gabriel said quietly, laying his hand gently over her hand on her belly. "You are a Hale. You were never alone."
