Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

While Ethan sat paralyzed in the leather chair on stage, Alexander Hale signaled to Arthur Vance. Two men wearing dark suits and carrying heavy metal cases walked briskly into the ballroom, followed by two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department.
The guests parted like the Red Sea as the officers marched toward the front of the room.
Ethan looked up, his blood running cold as he saw the badges. "Police? Why are there police here? I didn't do anything illegal!"
"That is where you are wrong, Ethan," Alexander said, opening a secondary file on his tablet. "When my sister sent us that text message forty minutes ago, our corporate risk team immediately executed a deep-level forensic dive into Cole Urban Development's internal ledgers."
Alexander walked over to Ethan, tapping the screen showing financial transactions.
"Over the last eleven months," Alexander explained, "you transferred four point two million dollars from the employee pension escrow account into a private shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Red Velvet Acquisitions LLC'."
Ethan’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "That... that was an investment vehicle! Vanessa set that up for international acquisitions!"
"Red Velvet Acquisitions is entirely owned by Vanessa Grant," Alexander stated coldly. "The funds were used to purchase a luxury villa in Cabo, three sports cars, and a private yacht anchored in Miami. You didn't just commit corporate fraud, Ethan. You embezzled millions of dollars from your own company's employees to fund your mistress's lifestyle."
The lead police officer stepped up to the stage, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Ethan Cole?" the officer asked sternly.
Ethan shook his head frantically, backing into the cushion of the armchair. "No... no, wait! Vanessa did that! She managed acquisitions! She told me it was legal tax optimization!"
"Ignorance of the law is not a defense, Mr. Cole," the officer said coldly. "You signed every transfer wire personally."
The officer grabbed Ethan’s arm, pulled him out of the chair, and forcefully twisted his arm behind his back. The sharp click-clack of the handcuffs locking around Ethan’s wrists echoed loudly through the silent ballroom.
"Ethan Cole, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement," the officer recited smoothly as he pushed Ethan toward the side exit of the ballroom. "You have the right to remain silent..."
"Claire!" Ethan screamed, his voice reaching a hysterical pitch as he was marched past his former business associates. "Claire! Help me! Please! Don't let them take me! I'm the father of your child!"
Claire stood beside her three brothers, her expression unreadable. She did not step forward. She did not reach out. She simply watched as the police officer pushed Ethan through the service door, clearing him from her sight forever.
The guests in the ballroom remained standing in awed, terrified silence.

Marcus Hale stepped back up to the podium, adjusting his cuffs.
"The bar is open for another hour," Marcus said smoothly to the crowd. "Drinks are on the Hale Family. Good evening."
