Chapter 10 - THE FORTRESS OF LOVE

One year after the wedding.

The grand ballroom of the Falcone estate was decorated with thousands of white roses, twinkling fairy lights, and bright colorful balloons.

It was Sophia's fifth birthday.

The room was filled with laughter, music, and guests. But these were not the cold, calculating syndicate politicians of the past. The guests included the estate staff, local schoolteachers, children from Sophia's new private academy, and the few loyal capos who had proven their devotion to Dante's new era.

The Falcone family had changed. Under Rosa’s influence as the new matriarch, the syndicate had shifted its focus away from street violence toward legitimate corporate shipping, legal infrastructure, and massive charitable foundations supporting single mothers and underprivileged children across Chicago.

At the head table sat Dante, wearing a simple navy suit, holding a small baby boy wrapped in a soft blue blanket—Carmine Dante Falcone, born three months ago.

Rosa sat beside him, glowing with motherly happiness, holding a glass of sparkling cider as she watched Sophia lead a group of five-year-olds in an energetic game of musical chairs near the birthday cake.

Marco, the elderly butler, stepped up to Dante's side, holding a silver tray with two cups of tea.

"A peaceful afternoon, Don Falcone," Marco remarked, a soft smile on his weathered face.

"It is, Marco," Dante said, looking down at his sleeping infant son, then over at his beautiful wife. "The best kind."

As the clock on the wall struck 4:00 PM, the music paused for a moment between songs.

Dante looked down the long side corridor—the hallway where he had once walked every afternoon like a man following a coffin.

Down the hall came Sophia.

She was wearing a bright pink party dress, a glittering birthday tiara on her head, and her hands folded solemnly behind her back.

She marched toward the head table taking absurdly long, dramatic toddler steps, her chest pushed out, her face arranged into a hilarious expression of terrifying authority.

The entire ballroom burst into warm, affectionate laughter.

Rosa laughed, shaking her head, while Dante set his tea down, handed the baby gently to Rosa, and stood up from the table.

He walked out to the middle of the dance floor, folded his hands behind his back, pushed his shoulders out, and matched her walk step for step.

Sophia stopped directly in front of him, looking up with her wide brown eyes.

"Why are you walking like me, Mister?" Sophia asked, her voice carrying over the happy room.

Dante crouched down, pulling his little girl into a giant, warm hug, lifting her high into the air as she giggled with pure joy.

May you like

"Because," Dante whispered softly into her ear, his eyes shining with profound happiness, "you taught me the right way to walk."

And in the warm, rose-scented light of his home, surrounded by his family, Dante Falcone finally knew he was home.
