Chapter 6 - THE RED DRESS

It was the night of the annual Falcone Winter Gala—a high-stakes gathering where political figures, judges, syndicate leaders, and high-society elites gathered at the estate to pay homage to the empire.

For years, Carmela had hosted the event. Tonight, it was expected to be a somber affair, handled entirely by external caterers.

At 6:00 PM, a heavy knock sounded on the door of the staff quarters on the third floor.

Rosa opened the door to find Marco, the head butler, standing in the hallway holding a large, black garment bag bearing the logo of an exclusive boutique on Michigan Avenue.

"Mr. Falcone requests your presence downstairs at seven o'clock," Marco said formally.

Rosa blinked, confused. "Marco, I'm working the coat check tonight with the catering crew—"

"Your name has been removed from the shift log, Rosa," Marco said, a rare, warm smile breaking his stoic face. "You are not working tonight. Please open the bag."

Rosa took the garment bag, unzipping it slowly. Inside lay a breathtaking, floor-length gown of deep, crushed crimson velvet. It was tailored with a flattering A-line silhouette, structured shoulders, and an elegant sweetheart neckline. Beside it was a smaller box containing a matching little red dress for Sophia, complete with a silver bow.

"Marco... I can't wear this," Rosa whispered, her hands hovering over the rich velvet. "This must have cost thousands of dollars. I'm a maid."

"Tonight, Rosa," Marco said gently, "you are the guest of honor. The Don’s orders."

An hour later, Rosa stood before the full-length mirror in her small room. The crimson dress fit her body like a dream, hugging her full hips and waist in a way that didn't hide her curves, but celebrated them with royal elegance. Her dark blond hair was swept up into a soft, romantic updo, with loose tendrils framing her face. She wore no expensive jewelry—only a simple silver locket containing a picture of her mother.

Sophia was bouncing on the bed, looking like a tiny holiday princess in her matching red dress, her dark curls pinned back with silver clips.

"You look like a queen, Mommy!" Sophia giggled.

Rosa looked at her reflection, feeling a strange, intoxicating surge of confidence. For her entire life, she had been made to feel heavy, clumsy, and invisible. But standing in this crimson dress, she didn't feel invisible. She felt powerful.

She took Sophia's hand and walked down the grand staircase toward the ballroom.

The grand foyer was filled with hundreds of guests in tuxedos and evening gowns. String quartets played softly near the marble fountain, champagne flowed from crystal towers, and low, guarded conversations echoed through the hall.

When Rosa and Sophia reached the landing of the grand staircase, a sudden wave of silence washed over the room.

Guests looked up, whispering behind their gloved hands. Capos, politicians, and high-society ladies stared in utter shock as the plus-sized maid walked down the stairs, carrying her daughter, looking as regal as any queen who had ever walked those halls.

At the bottom of the stairs stood Dante Falcone.

He wore a bespoke black tuxedo, his dark hair combed back, looking every inch the formidable, terrifying Don. But as his eyes lifted to meet Rosa on the stairs, his breath caught in his throat. His amber eyes swept over her in the crimson dress, blazing with an intense, unvarnished admiration that made Rosa’s heart skip a beat.

He stepped forward, holding out his hand.

"You are breathtaking, Rosa," Dante said softly, his voice carrying over the silent room.

Rosa placed her hand in his. "Dante... everyone is staring."

"Let them stare," Dante said, lifting her hand to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. "Let them see what real beauty looks like."

From across the room, standing near the bar, Capo Bruno and Marina Vance watched the scene with burning rage.

"Look at him," Marina spat, clutching her glass so tightly the crystal cracked. "He's lost to her. He's parading her in front of the entire Commission!"

Bruno’s face was dark. He caught the eye of two large men standing near the side exit—his personal enforcers.

"The Gala ends at midnight," Bruno muttered into his glass. "When she goes back to the staff wing to pack her child's things, we hit. Quietly. No scene."
