Chapter 10 - The Queen of the Syndicate

Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the Moretti Estate was ablaze with light, music, and the quiet, polite hum of the city’s highest elite.
It was the annual Moretti Foundation Gala—a massive charitable event that raised tens of millions of dollars for pediatric medical research, free dialysis centers, and nursing scholarships across the state.
Politicians, business moguls, city council members, and high-ranking syndicate leaders from three states filled the vast room, dressed in immaculate tuxedos and diamond-encrusted evening gowns.
Yet, every eye in the room was focused on the head table at the top of the marble dais.
Sitting beside Carter Moretti was Cynthia Quinn.
She was breathtaking. She wore a custom, emerald-green velvet gown designed specifically for her lush, gorgeous curves. The deep neckline showcased her radiant skin, while a stunning necklace of emeralds and diamonds—a Moretti family heirloom passed down for generations—rested against her collarbone. Her dark hair was styled in elegant, soft waves, her hazel eyes bright, confident, and filled with a serene, regal authority.
Beside her, Ethan sat dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, looking healthy, vibrant, and full of life. His recent lab results had shown remarkable stability under his new private treatment plan, and he had officially been moved to the top of the regional transplant list.
Standing near the edge of the ballroom floor, looking utterly out of place among the elite guests, were Dr. Preston Vance and Chairman Reginald Sterling.
They had been invited not as honored guests, but as required attendees. They stood quietly in their suits, holding champagne glasses, watching the woman they had once mocked as "too slow" and "bursting at the seams" rule over the grandest hall in the state.
"Look at her," Vance whispered, his voice laced with a terrifying blend of regret and awe. "She... she looks like a queen."
"Shut up, Preston," Sterling hissed under his breath, taking a nervous gulp of champagne. "If Moretti hears you even breathing her name, he’ll pull our hospital's funding by midnight. Just smile and bow when they walk past."
At the head table, Carter turned his dark eyes toward Cynthia.
He reached under the white linen tablecloth, taking her soft, warm hand into his broad, scarred palm, lacing his fingers tightly with hers.
"Are you enjoying the evening, my love?" Carter asked softly, his deep baritone meant only for her ears.
Cynthia looked out at the grand ballroom, seeing the nursing scholarship recipients standing near the stage, seeing her brother laughing with Marcus near the punch bowl, feeling the steady, impenetrable wall of love and protection that Carter had built around her life.
She turned her head, looking into the storm-dark eyes of the mafia boss who had stood beside her hospital bed, who had claimed her before the entire world, and who loved her with a fierce, absolute devotion.
"I am," Cynthia replied warmly, a beautiful, radiant smile illuminating her face. She reached up with her free hand, gently adjusting the lapel of his tailored tuxedo jacket. "Though I think I preferred the quiet Tuesday mornings in room four."
Carter let out a soft, deep chuckle, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he leaned in close, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against her temple.

"The Tuesdays are over, Nurse Quinn," Carter whispered, his voice filled with a quiet, eternal promise. "Every day is ours now."
Cynthia smiled, laying her head softly against his broad shoulder, holding his hand tight as the music swelled across the grand ballroom, celebrating a love born from lead, forged in blood, and bound forever by absolute grace.
