Chapter 9 - The Sanctuary

The Moretti Estate was situated on a high, private cliff overlooking the glittering expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, twenty miles outside the city limits.

It was a magnificent, stone-walled manor surrounded by dense pine forests, manicured gardens, and fortified iron gates. It was a fortress of absolute security and breathtaking beauty—a place where the noise, violence, and cruelty of the world outside could never enter.

The sleek black Maybach pulled up to the grand stone entrance.

Marcus opened the door, and Carter stepped out first, extending his hand to help Cynthia down. Ethan scrambled out of the trailing vehicle, his eyes wide as saucers as he took in the towering stone mansion, the swimming pool, and the vast ocean view.

"Whoa..." Ethan breathed, staring in absolute awe. "Cyn... is this... is this where we're staying?"

"This is your home now, Ethan," Carter said warmly, placing a hand on the young boy's shoulder. "Your suite is on the second floor, overlooking the water. It has a private dialysis setup installed by the chief of nephrology at Johns Hopkins."

Ethan’s jaw dropped. "A private dialysis setup?! In the house?!"

"No more community clinics," Carter promised. "No more waiting on cold curbs. A private medical team will handle your treatments right here, three days a week, while you play your games."

Ethan looked at his sister, tears of pure, unadulterated happiness rising in his eyes, before throwing his arms around Carter’s waist in a tight, emotional hug. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti! Thank you so much!"

Carter stiffened slightly—unused to genuine, affectionate physical contact—before a warm smile broke across his jaw, his large hand gently patting the boy's back. "You're family now, Ethan. You don't have to thank me."

Marcus led Ethan inside to show him his new wing, leaving Cynthia and Carter standing alone on the stone terrace overlooking the sea.

The afternoon breeze was cool, carrying the salty scent of the ocean and the rustle of pine needles.

Cynthia walked to the edge of the stone balustrade, resting her hands against the smooth granite, looking out at the endless horizon. She felt the cool air against her face, feeling lighter, freer, and more at peace than she had ever felt in her entire life.

Carter walked up behind her. He didn't speak. He simply opened his broad arms, wrapping them around her waist from behind, pulling her soft, lush back securely against his chest, resting his chin gently atop her head.

Cynthia leaned back into his solid, muscular warmth, letting her hands rest over his dark, tattooed forearms wrapped around her waist.

"Is this real, Carter?" Cynthia whispered softly, looking out at the sun setting over the blue water. "Sometimes I feel like I’m going to wake up in that cramped apartment, looking at those yellow debt notices on the kitchen table."

"It’s real, my sweet nurse," Carter murmured into her hair, his arms tightening around her with a fierce, protective warmth. "The debt is gone. The hospital is behind you. Vance and Sterling will never touch your life again."

He turned her slowly in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down into her beautiful hazel eyes, his dark features soft, completely open, and filled with a profound, unshakeable love.

"For three years," Carter said quietly, "I came to that clinic looking for a reason to believe there was still something good in this world. I thought I was just watching an angel from afar."

He reached up, his long, scarred fingers gently tracing the soft curve of her jaw, his thumb wiping away a stray tear of happiness from her cheek.

"But you didn't just show me something good, Cynthia," Carter whispered, his gravelly voice trembling with raw devotion. "You saved my life. You gave me a home. You gave me a heart."

Cynthia looked up into the storm-dark eyes of the man who had torn down empires to protect her, feeling an overwhelming wave of love fill every corner of her soul.

"Then take care of it, Carter Moretti," Cynthia murmured softly, rising on her tiptoes, resting her hands against his broad chest. "Because my heart belongs to you now."

Carter smiled—a brilliant, breathtaking smile that lit up his sharp face—and leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a slow, deep, passionate kiss that echoed with the promise of a lifetime.
