Chapter 8 - The Claim

Ten days after the shooting, Cynthia was finally cleared for discharge.
Her recovery had been nothing short of miraculous. The spinal swelling had completely receded, allowing her to walk with full strength and mobility. Her incisions were healing cleanly, and her physical stamina had returned under the diligent care of the hospital's finest physical therapists.
The morning of her discharge was a clear, brilliant Sunday.
Inside Room 502, Cynthia stood before the full-length mirror, dressed in clothing that Carter had personally ordered for her—a stunning, elegant emerald-green silk blouse that complemented her fair skin, dark trousers that tailored perfectly to her lush curves, and a soft cashmere coat.
For the first time in years, she didn't look like an overworked, exhausted nurse wearing oversized, baggy scrubs. She looked radiant, strong, and deeply beautiful.
The door opened, and Carter walked into the suite.
He was wearing a dark navy suit, looking sharp, powerful, and immaculate. But when his dark eyes landed on Cynthia standing by the window, he froze in mid-step, his breath catching in his throat.
"Cynthia," Carter murmured, walking toward her, his gaze locked onto her face. "You look... incredible."
Cynthia flushed softly, offering a warm smile. "Thank you for the clothes, Carter. They fit perfectly."
"They were made for you," Carter said simply. He walked up beside her, placing a gentle hand against the small of her back—a gesture that felt entirely natural now. "Are you ready to leave?"
"I am," Cynthia replied. "Where are we going? To my old apartment to pack Ethan's things?"
Carter smiled—a quiet, secret smile that sent a thrill of anticipation through her chest. "Your old apartment has already been packed. Your things are already waiting for you at your new home."
Before Cynthia could ask what he meant, the double doors of the room opened, and Marcus stepped in with two wheelchairs for Ethan and their luggage.
They made their way down the private VIP elevator to the main lobby on the ground floor.
The lobby—which had been completely repaired and restored over the past week—was packed with people. Hospital staff, nurses, doctors, news crews, and hospital board members had gathered near the main entrance to witness "The Hero Nurse's" departure.
Dr. Preston Vance and Board Chairman Reginald Sterling were standing near the front doors, looking tense and formal.
As the VIP elevator doors opened, the crowd went quiet.
Cynthia stepped out into the grand lobby, flanked by Carter on her right, Ethan on her left, and six heavy-set guards in charcoal suits forming a protective perimeter around them.
A barrage of camera flashes went off instantly. Reporters pushed against the velvet ropes, shouting questions.
"Nurse Quinn! Are you returning to Saint Jude's?!" "Cynthia! How do you feel about the Marcone syndicate arrests?!" "Is it true you're leaving nursing forever?!"
Cynthia paused near the center of the lobby, looking at the familiar reception desk, the marble pillars, and the faces of her former colleagues. She saw Cassie standing near the back, wiping tears of happiness from her eyes, giving Cynthia a secret thumbs-up.
Dr. Vance stepped forward, trying to maintain an air of professional authority in front of the rolling news cameras.
"Nurse Quinn," Vance said smoothly, extending a hand for the cameras to capture. "On behalf of Saint Jude’s Cardiology Department, we want to formally congratulate you on your recovery. The hospital would be honored to welcome you back to your post whenever you are ready—"
Before Vance could finish his scripted speech, Carter Moretti stepped forward.
He didn't look at Vance. He didn't look at the news cameras.
Instead, Carter walked straight up to Cynthia. In full view of five hundred hospital staff members, board executives, and television news crews broadcasting live across the state, Carter reached out, wrapped his strong arm around Cynthia’s waist, and pulled her lush, beautiful frame directly against his chest.
The entire lobby went dead silent. Camera shutters clicked frantically in a blinding frenzy.
Carter looked down into Cynthia’s hazel eyes, his face filled with an open, fierce, and completely unashamed devotion.
"She is not coming back to this hospital, Vance," Carter’s gravelly voice echoed across the quiet lobby, picked up clearly by every news microphone in the room. "She is never going to serve another table, answer another doctor's bark, or swallow another insult."
He gently reached up, lifting Cynthia’s chin with his fingers, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, terrifying beauty.
"Cynthia Quinn belongs with me now," Carter declared loudly, his voice ringing through the hall like a golden bell. "She is under the protection of the Moretti family. Anyone who discredits her name, anyone who insults her grace, will answer directly to me."
He leaned down, right in front of the flashing cameras and gasping hospital board members, and pressed a deep, passionate kiss against Cynthia’s soft lips.
Cynthia let out a soft, breathless gasp, her arms instinctively wrapping around Carter’s neck, kissing him back with all the love, trust, and passion that had been building in her heart over the past ten agonizing days.
When Carter finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, the entire lobby erupted into a chaotic storm of cheers, applause, and flashing lights.
Dr. Vance stood frozen, his mouth agape, realizing with absolute, terrifying clarity that the broad, "oversized" nurse he had mocked weeks ago was now the untouchable queen of the most powerful man in the city.

Carter smiled down at Cynthia, wrapping his arm securely around her waist, guiding her through the parting crowd toward the open double doors.
"Let’s go home, Cynthia," Carter whispered into her ear.
