Chapter 4 - The Safehouse on 8th

The rain poured in relentless, vertical sheets over the concrete jungle of West Chelsea.

An unmarked black ambulance sat idling in the dark alleyway behind an abandoned meatpacking warehouse on 8th Avenue. Inside the climate-controlled rear compartment, the air smelled heavily of antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and copper.

Daniel lay on a stainless-steel operating table, an IV line dripping saline into his arm, a thick pressure bandage taped tightly across his chest.

Standing over him was a middle-aged woman with sharp, graying hair, wearing a blood-stained surgical apron. She dropped a bloody pair of forceps into a metal tray with a loud clink.

"The bullet missed his heart by three millimeters, Claire," the woman said, pulling off her rubber gloves. "He lost two pints of blood, but his vitals are stabilizing. He'll live."

Claire was sitting on a metal stool in the corner of the vehicle, wrapped in a heavy navy-blue wool coat over her ruined gold gown. She was holding a damp cloth, methodically wiping the dried blood from her knuckles.

"Thank you, Dr. Chen," Claire said without looking up. "I owe you."

"You owe me three thousand dollars in medical supplies and a new set of forged credentials," Dr. Chen retorted dryly, leaning against the counter. "I retired from fixing broken mercenaries three years ago, Viper. When you called my emergency line, I thought you were dead."

"I was," Claire replied softly. "For five years, I was just a woman who liked oil painting and quiet evenings."

"And now?"

Claire looked over at Daniel’s pale, sleeping face. "Now my past is trying to kill the only good thing I've ever built."

Dr. Chen sighed, picking up a tablet device from the counter. "Your husband isn't just an innocent victim here, Claire. Do you know what he bought at that auction tonight?"

"The shipping syndicate," Claire said.

"He bought Titan Logistics," Chen corrected, flipping through a encrypted file on the screen. "Which happens to be the primary front company used by Marcus Vance to move money, weapons, and human cargo across four continents. Daniel didn't just buy a company—he bought Marcus’s entire empire out from under him using a court-ordered asset forfeiture."

Claire stood up slowly, her navy coat falling open to reveal the heavy tactical belt she had strapped around her waist. "Daniel didn't know what Titan really was. He thought it was a distressed freight network."

"Well, he knows now," Chen said grimly. "Or at least, he knows enough to get himself murdered. Marcus isn't going to let that ledger fall into federal hands. He has two dozen hitmen searching every private hospital in New York right now."

A sharp, metallic rap sounded against the rear door of the ambulance.

Claire’s hand instantly dropped to the butt of her pistol. "Who is it?"

"It's Vance," a voice called out through the heavy steel door. "I'm alone, Mrs. Han."

Claire stepped over to the door, unlocked the heavy deadbolt, and pulled it open.

Vance—Daniel’s chief of security—stood in the rain, his trench coat soaked, his face pale and bruised from the ballroom chaotic evacuation. He looked at Claire, his eyes filled with a deep, newfound wariness.

"The police have cordoned off the Grand Astoria," Vance said, his voice flat. "They're listing you as a person of interest, Mrs. Han. Or whatever your name is."

"My name is Claire," she said coldly. "Did you secure the penthouse?"

"I sent four men to watch the building," Vance replied, stepping inside the ambulance. He looked at Daniel lying on the table, then back at Claire. "Mr. Han's board of directors is panicking. The stock is dropping ten percent in after-hours trading. And I have three different federal agencies asking why my boss's wife knows how to dismantle a professional hit squad with her bare hands."

Claire stepped closer to Vance, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "Tell the board that Daniel is recovering from a minor medical incident. Tell the police nothing. And if any of your men leak a single detail about what happened on that balcony, I will personally find them."

Vance swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Understood. But Mrs. Han... there's something else. A package arrived at the penthouse twenty minutes ago."

"What kind of package?"

Vance reached into his coat and pulled out a small, velvet-lined wooden box. "It was hand-delivered by a courier. It was addressed to 'Viper'."

Claire took the box. Her fingers tightened around the polished wood. She unlatched the silver clasp and flipped the lid open.

Inside, resting on a bed of red silk, was a single, silver-plated bullet engraved with a single word:

REUNION.
