Chapter 9 - The Dawn

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of rose, gold, and soft amber.

A cool, crisp autumn breeze blew off the East River, clearing away the lingering fog over Pier 19.

Outside the warehouse, three black unmarked federal sedans sat idling, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the concrete quay.

A tall, grey-haired man in a dark trench coat—Director Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation—stood near the water's edge, holding a thick manila folder.

The heavy iron doors of the warehouse slid open with a loud groan.

Claire stepped out into the morning sunlight. Her tactical suit was torn, her hands bruised, but her posture was steady, her head held high.

Director Miller walked over to meet her, stopping three feet away. He looked past her into the quiet, silent warehouse, then down at the file in his hands.

"Marcus Vance?" Miller asked, his voice low and solemn.

"The Syndicate's network has been permanently terminated, Director," Claire replied, her voice calm and clear. "The physical ledger, along with all back-up servers, has been uploaded to your secure DOJ portal."

Miller closed the folder with a heavy sigh. "You realize what this means, Claire? The information in that ledger will trigger the largest federal prosecution of corporate crime in American history. Hundreds of powerful people are going to prison."

"Good," Claire said simply.

"And what about you?" Miller asked, studying her face closely. "The file contains records of your past operations with the Division. Technically, I have a warrant in my pocket for your arrest."

Claire looked out over the river toward the rising sun. "That file lists the operative known as Viper, Director. And Viper died five years ago at Pier 19."

Miller stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then he slowly reached into his coat, pulled out the arrest warrant, and tore it neatly into four pieces, letting the paper scraps float away on the morning breeze.

"Safe travels, Mrs. Han," Miller said quietly.

Claire offered him a faint, respectful nod, turned, and walked toward a sleek white sedan waiting at the edge of the pier.

Sitting in the driver's seat, wearing a fresh jacket over his bandaged chest, was Vance—Daniel’s chief of security.

Claire opened the passenger door and stepped inside.

"Where to, Mrs. Han?" Vance asked, his tone filled with deep, unwavering respect.

Claire looked out the window at the city waking up in the golden light.

"Take me home," she said softly. "My husband is waiting for me."
