Chapter 6 - The Breach

The silence in the dark penthouse was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the rain striking the glass windows outside.
Claire didn't move. She stood three feet in front of Daniel, her vision adjusting rapidly to the low light. Her weapon—the suppressed SIG Sauer she had taken from the tactical operative—was raised in a low ready position, aimed directly at the study’s double mahogany doors.
"Claire..." Daniel whispered from the sofa, his hand feeling around the cushion for anything he could use as a weapon.
"Shh," she breathed. "Don't move. Don't speak."
One, two, three pair of footsteps.
They were moving in a silent, tactical sweep through the main living room—soft rubber soles on Italian marble. Professional. Experienced.
Claire reached behind her back, unhooked a small, cylindrical flash-bang grenade from her tactical belt, and pulled the pin with her teeth. She held the lever down with her thumb.
The study door handles began to turn—slowly, silently.
Claire waited. Three... two... one...
The door swung open. A sliver of moonlight from the hallway illuminated the silhouette of a tall man in a dark trench coat.
Claire tossed the flash-bang through the doorway and slammed the heavy oak door shut.
BANG.
A blinding white flash and an ear-splitting two-hundred-decibel pop echoed through the hallway outside. Screams of agony and disorientated shouts echoed through the wood.
Claire kicked the study door open instantly, stepping through the smoke.
The lead operative was on his knees, clutching his eyes, his submachine gun dangling from his sling. Claire stepped forward and delivered a devastating roundhouse kick to his jaw, snapping his head back and sending him crashing against the hallway art gallery wall.
The second operative, partially blinded, fired a wild burst of automatic fire into the ceiling.
Claire dropped low, sliding across the slick hardwood floor beneath the line of fire. She brought her pistol up and fired two precise shots into his chest.
Pfft-pfft.
The second man collapsed dead across a glass coffee table.
The third operative—a massive, broad-shouldered man wearing heavy body armor—grabbed Claire from behind, wrapping a heavy kevlar arm around her throat in a tight rear-naked chokehold.
Claire’s breath was cut off instantly. Her pistol was knocked from her hand, clattering across the floor out of reach.
"Got you... you little bitch," the man grunted in her ear, tightening his grip with crushing force.
Claire didn't panic. She didn't fight the arm around her neck.
Instead, she reached into her coat pocket, pulled out the silver-plated bullet Marcus had sent her, and jammed the sharp, pointed copper tip directly into the operative’s eye socket through his tactical mask.
The man screamed in absolute agony, his grip instantly loosening as he stumbled backward, clutching his bloody face.
Claire spun around, grabbed his combat knife from his chest rig, and drove the blade straight down through the top of his shoulder collarbone, severing the brachial plexus nerve.
The massive operative dropped to his knees, paralyzed, his breathing ragged.
Claire stood over him, gasping for air, her chest heaving as she retrieved her fallen pistol from the floor. She pointed the weapon at his head.
"Where is Marcus?" she asked, her voice cold as ice.
The operative spat blood onto the floor, grinning despite the horrific pain. "He's... he's at the docklands. Pier 19. He said... he said if you wanted to finish what started five years ago... you'd come alone."
Claire stared at the man for a long second.
Then she brought the butt of her gun down against his temple, knocking him cold.
She turned back toward the study.
Daniel was standing in the doorway, clutching the doorframe for support, his face pale as death as he stared at the bloody carnage filling his pristine luxury hallway.
"Claire..." he whispered, his voice trembling violently. "You're... you're going there, aren't you?"
Claire walked over to him, stopping inches away. She reached up, gently placing her hand against his cheek.
"If I don't finish this tonight, Daniel," she said softly, "they will never stop coming for you. They will hunt you to the ends of the earth."
"Then let me come with you," Daniel begged, tears streaming down his face. "I have security teams... I have money... I have—"
"You have a bullet hole in your chest, my love," Claire said, a gentle, melancholic smile touching her lips. "This isn't your world, Daniel. It's mine. And it's time I cleaned it up."
Before he could respond, Claire pressed her lips against his in a deep, passionate kiss—a kiss filled with five years of love, regret, and unspoken words.
When she pulled back, she looked into his eyes one last time.

"If I'm not back by sunrise," she whispered, "tell the world I was just your quiet wife."
She turned and disappeared into the dark, rain-soaked night.
