Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

Martin froze, slowly turning his head to look back toward the end of the table. "What did you say?"
I didn't answer him right away.
Slowly, deliberately, I tossed the heavy gray wool blanket off my legs, letting it fall onto the polished floor.
Then, in front of fifty flashing cameras, twelve horrified board members, and a room full of stunned journalists, I placed both feet firmly on the carpet.
I stood up.
Gasps exploded across the room like a series of small detonations. Several journalists leaped out of their chairs. Vanessa's mouth dropped open in absolute shock, her face draining of all color until she looked like a ghost in a red dress.
I stood at my full height—six-foot-two—broad-shouldered, steady, and completely uninjured. I straightened the cuffs of my black suit jacket, feeling the raw power of the room shift instantly back into my hands.
"Julian..." Daniel gasped, taking three frantic steps back until his legs hit the edge of the board table. "You... your legs..."
"My legs are fine, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying a terrifying calm that silenced every microphone in the room. "They were always fine."
"This is an outrage!" Martin roared, slamming his fist onto the rosewood table, though his hands were trembling visibly. "You staged this! You lied to the board! You lied to the shareholders!"
"I created a test, Martin," I replied, walking slowly, smoothly down the length of the long table toward him. Every step I took sounded like thunder against the quiet room. "A test to see who among my circle was loyal to this company, and who was waiting for me to fall so they could pick my bones clean."
I stopped directly across from Martin, leaning forward and resting my palms on the table, staring straight into his panicked eyes.
"And you failed, Uncle. Spectacularly."
"Security!" Martin screamed, looking frantically toward the doors. "Remove him! He's mentally unstable!"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open. Four armed federal agents in dark blue jackets marked with SEC ENFORCEMENT strode into the room, flanked by Marcus and six uniformed police officers.
"Martin Vance," the lead federal agent announced, pulling a thick arrest warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and wire fraud involving offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Camera flashes flared continuously like lightning in a storm.
Martin stumbled back against the executive chair, his face slick with cold sweat. "Offshore accounts? That's impossible! You don't have proof!"
Marcus stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal documents in front of the federal agents. "We have six weeks of recorded audio, digital ledger trails, and fully decrypted financial transfers authorized by your private key, Martin. The federal judge signed the seizure warrants twenty minutes ago."
Two officers stepped forward, pulling Martin's arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Julian! Please!" Martin shrieked as he was pulled away from the table. "I'm your family! Your father's brother!"
"My father had a brother who was a honorable man," I said coldly, turning my back on him. "You are just a thief who got greedy."
