Chapter 9 - The Clearing of the House

As the officers dragged a screaming Martin out of the boardroom, I turned my attention to the remaining traitors.
Daniel stood frozen near the window, his eyes wide with terror as he looked at me.
"Daniel," I said softly, walking over to stand in front of my former vice president.
"Julian... I... I was forced into it," Daniel stammered, tears of panic welling in his eyes. "Martin threatened my position! He said he would ruin my career if I didn't help him forged the audit reports!"
"You had a choice, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying no hatred, only a deep, permanent disappointment. "I gave you everything. A career, a fortune, my trust. And you sold me out for a title you didn't earn."
I looked at Marcus. "Terminate his contract immediately. File civil recovery suits for every bonus he was paid over the past three years. Ensure his financial licenses are permanently revoked."
"No! Julian, please!" Daniel begged as two private security guards escorted him out of the room.
Then, I turned to Vanessa.
She stood near the head of the table, her hands clutching her designer handbag like a weapon. The arrogant, cruel woman who had mocked me in my own ballroom was gone, replaced by a terrified socialite who realized her gilded world had just shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
"Julian," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a desperate, honeyed purr as she took a small step toward me. "Darling... you have to understand... I was just playing along with Martin. I was trying to protect you! I was trying to keep him from taking everything while you were recovering!"
I looked at her, seeing the utter emptiness behind her beautiful face.
"You called me worthless, Vanessa," I said quietly, the memory of her words in the ballroom echoing in my mind. "You flicked my blanket. You threatened to fire my staff. You waited for me to lose everything so you could leave with a settlement."
"I was angry!" she cried, reaching out to touch my arm. "I didn't mean it! I love you, Julian!"
I stepped back, letting her hand fall uselessly into the empty air.
"The engagement is over, Vanessa," I said, pulling the heavy diamond ring from my pocket—the ring she had left on my nightstand that morning before leaving for the meeting—and tossing it onto the rosewood table. "The prenuptial agreement contains an explicit moral failure clause. You leave this house with nothing. Your family's accounts with Vance Global are canceled effective immediately."
"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed, her poise collapsing into ugly, hysterical rage. "My mother will sue you! I'll ruin your reputation!"
"Your mother is currently being served with an eviction notice for the penthouse my trust provided her," Marcus chimed in smoothly from the side of the room. "You have two hours to clear your personal items from the estate, Miss Vanessa. After that, you will be arrested for trespassing."
Vanessa looked around the room. Every lens was focused on her humiliation. Every board member stared at her with disgust. She let out a choked sob, covered her face, and fled out of the boardroom, the sound of her clicking heels swallowed by the roaring chatter of the press.
I stood alone at the head of the boardroom table. The traitors were gone. The empire was secure.
I turned my head toward the back of the room.

Clara was still standing near the double doors. She hadn't joined in the noise or the chaos. She simply stood there, watching me with a quiet, brilliant smile, tears of pure joy glistening in her clear brown eyes.
I walked past the reporters, past the board members, past the flashbulbs, straight toward her.
