Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

The silence that followed the doctor's confession was absolute, heavy, and toxic.
Amara felt a cold chill run straight down her spine. Mario Bianchi was Salvatore's eldest uncle—a respected, sixty-year-old statesman of the crime family who ran the syndicate's lucrative port operations, legal real estate holdings, and charitable foundations. He was the man who sat at the head of the family dinner table during holidays, the man who had delivered the emotional eulogy at Salvatore's father's funeral two years ago. To the outside world—and to the family itself—Uncle Mario was the wise, elder pillar of the Bianchi empire.
Rocco didn't react with anger. His face simply turned to stone. He slowly stood up straight, smoothing down the lapels of his raincoat.
"Mario," Rocco repeated quietly, as if testing the weight of the name on his tongue.
"Yes! I swear to God, it was Mario!" Vance wept, holding his broken finger against his chest. "He met me at a private club three weeks ago, right after Salvatore was shot. He gave me a sterile medical box containing those six specific black sutures. He told me they were treated with a special low-grade toxin that would mimic a natural necrotizing infection. He said if anyone questioned it, I was to diagnose it as aggressive staph or gangrene. He paid me five hundred thousand dollars in an offshore account in the Caymans!"
"Where is the rest of the thread, Marcus?" Amara asked suddenly from the doorway.
Vance looked at her, his breathing ragged. "What?"
"If someone manufactured those sutures, they didn't just make six of them," Amara said, her garment-factory instincts taking over again. "An industrial thread coating run requires an entire spool. Nobody sets up a chemical dip for six inches of thread. Where is the rest of the spool?"
Rocco turned back to Vance, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Answer her, Doctor."
Vance swallowed hard, pointing a trembling hand toward the heavy oak desk sitting in the corner of the bedroom. "In... in the bottom locked drawer. The black metal box. The extra spools are in there."
Frankie stepped over to the desk, pulled a heavy crowbar from his belt, and jammed it into the seam of the bottom drawer. With a loud, splintering crack, the wood gave way, exposing the interior. Frankie reached inside and pulled out a heavy, matte-black steel box.
He brought it over to the bed and set it down. Rocco picked up a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and smashed the box's lock with a single, powerful blow.
The lid popped open. Inside, resting on black velvet lining, were three full spools of heavy, braided black nylon thread—identical to the ones Amara had removed from Salvatore's shoulder. Alongside the spools were four small glass vials filled with a thick, amber chemical liquid, labeled with hand-written lab notations, and a thick ledger book detailing bank transfer codes, dates, and offshore account numbers.
Rocco picked up the ledger book and flipped through the pages. His dark eyes scanned the names and numbers, stopping on a page dated two weeks prior.
"Uncle Mario wasn't just trying to kill Salvatore," Rocco said, his voice flat and terrifyingly calm. "He was setting up a complete takeover of the entire syndicate. Look at these ledger entries. Payments to three capos in our own ranks. Payments to the rival Moretti family who staged the car shooting in the first place."
Rocco closed the ledger with a sharp thud.
"The car shooting wasn't meant to kill Salvatore," Rocco realized aloud, his eyes flashing with dark revelation. "It was just meant to graze him! It was a setup to get him onto a surgical table where Vance could insert the poison! Mario didn't want a loud, messy hit that would trigger a war with the rival families. He wanted Salvatore to die quietly in a bed, looking like he died from medical complications, so Mario could step into the power vacuum as the grieving uncle who takes over the family for the sake of stability!"
Vance looked up at Rocco with hollow, desperate eyes. "I gave you everything, Rocco. I gave you the name, the proof, the spools! Please... just let me take my wife and leave the country. We'll vanish! You'll never see us again!"
Rocco looked down at the pathetic doctor for a long, agonizing moment. Then he looked at Paulie and Frankie.
"Paulie," Rocco said quietly. "Take the doctor and the spools down to the basement. Frankie, make sure his wife stays asleep until morning."
"Rocco, no! Please!" Vance shrieked as Paulie grabbed him by the throat and dragged him out of the bed, pulling him toward the doorway. "I have a family! Rocco!"

Rocco didn't look back. He turned to Amara, holding the heavy ledger book under his arm.
"Come on, Amara," Rocco said, his voice quiet and deadly. "It's time to wake up the boss."
