Chapter 7 - The Family Dinner

The dining room of the Bianchi estate was a masterpiece of old-world Italian opulence. A grand chandelier constructed of hand-cut Venetian crystal hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, sparkling glow over a twenty-foot table carved from solid dark mahogany.
At 8:00 PM, the table was set for three.
At the head of the table sat Salvatore Bianchi, wearing a sharp, custom-tailored dark grey suit. His left arm was held neatly in a matching silk sling, but his posture was upright, commanding, and immaculate.
Sitting to his right was Rocco, clad in a sleek black suit, quietly sipping a glass of expensive Barolo wine. Standing quietly near the carved wooden sideboard, dressed in an elegant black dress provided by the estate's tailor, was Amara. She held a silver wine decanter, her watchful eyes sweeping over every plate, glass, and piece of cutlery on the table.
The heavy double doors of the dining room swung open, and Uncle Mario Bianchi stepped into the room.
Mario was sixty-two years old, tall, handsome, and impeccably groomed. He wore an expensive navy-blue Italian suit, a gold Rolex watch glistening on his wrist, and a warm, broad smile painted across his face. But as his eyes landed on Salvatore sitting healthy, awake, and upright at the head of the table, a microscopic flicker of sheer, icy shock flashed across his features before he instantly smoothed it away.
"Salvatore! My dear boy!" Mario exclaimed, expanding his arms wide as he strode into the room. "Look at you! The doctors told me yesterday you were on death's door! It's a miracle! An absolute miracle from God!"
Mario walked up to the head of the table, leaning down to embrace his nephew, kissing him on both cheeks in the traditional family fashion. Salvatore accepted the embrace passively, his face an unreadable mask of stone.
"Sit down, Uncle," Salvatore said smoothly, gesturing to the empty leather chair sitting directly across from Rocco. "Please. We have a lot to celebrate tonight."
Mario sat down, unbuttoning his suit jacket with smooth, practiced grace. "I brought a bottle of vintage grappa from my private cellar down at the docks. We must toast to your health, nephew! The whole family has been praying for you."
"The prayers worked," Salvatore replied dryly. "The fever broke late last night. It turns out the doctors were looking at the wrong thing the whole time."
Mario leaned forward, his hands resting on the white linen tablecloth, his expression filled with deep, hypocritical concern. "Is that so? What was it? Infection? A bad reaction to the antibiotics?"
"Something like that," Salvatore said, taking a slow sip of his mineral water. "It turns out there was something foreign buried deep inside the wound. Something that shouldn't have been there."
Mario's fingers twitched almost imperceptibly against the tablecloth. "Foreign? Like... bullet shrapnel?"
"No," Salvatore said softly, looking directly into his uncle's eyes. "Thread. Heavy, braided black nylon thread. Coated in a slow-release industrial cyanide compound."
The temperature in the grand dining room seemed to plummet instantly to absolute zero.
Mario's warm, celebratory smile froze on his face. He sat completely still, his gray eyes darting for a fraction of a second toward Rocco, then toward the curtained windows of the room.
"Thread?" Mario repeated, forcing a nervous chuckle from his throat. "That... that sounds absurd, Salvatore. Medical sutures are sterile! Who could possibly put such a thing inside your body?"
Salvatore didn't answer right away. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, and set it on the mahogany table. He slid it slowly across the polished wood until it rested directly in front of his uncle.
"Open it, Mario," Salvatore commanded quietly.
Mario's hands trembled slightly as he reached out and lifted the silver latch of the box.
Inside, resting on white velvet, was one of the spools of heavy black nylon thread taken from Dr. Vance's desk, along with a high-resolution photograph of the handwritten ledger entries showing Mario's offshore bank transfers to the rival Moretti family.
Mario stared down into the box. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking hollow, old, and terribly frail. The charismatic, powerful elder statesman of the family vanished, replaced by a trapped rat facing its executioner.
"Salvatore..." Mario whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, pathetic desperation. "You... you don't understand... I did it for the family... I did it for the organization..."
"You did it for yourself," Salvatore spat, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that echoed off the high ceilings. "You sold out your own blood to the Moretti family. You paid my personal doctor to poison me like a dog in my own bed so you could take my chair!"
"Salvatore, please!" Mario begged, tears filling his eyes as he gripped the edge of the table. "I raised you after your father died! I taught you how to run the docks! You can't do this to your own uncle!"
May you like
"I didn't do this to you, Uncle Mario," Salvatore said coldly, leaning back in his leather chair. "You stitched this coat yourself. Now you have to wear it."
Salvatore looked up at Rocco and gave a single, slight nod of his head.
