Chapter 4 - The Signing

On Friday morning, six days after I stood in the rain outside Hillcrest Lane, I sat in the executive conference room on the forty-second floor of the Sterling & Vance Building downtown.
The room was quiet, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a sweeping view of the city’s financial district. Clara was resting comfortably in her stroller beside my chair, fast asleep under the soft hum of the building's air filtration system.
Across the long glass table sat Michael Grant, his cash buyer Mr. Arthur Henderson—a silver-haired man in a tailored grey suit—and my attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Jason, a fact that had caused Jason endless confusion during our courtship).
"The wire transfer of three million two hundred thousand dollars was initiated by Northern Trust forty-five minutes ago, Emily," Marcus said, laying a thick stack of legal documents in front of me. "The title company has verified the clearance of encumbrances. The property is completely unencumbered by mortgages, liens, or third-party claims."
Mr. Henderson smiled across the table, holding an expensive fountain pen. "Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Thorne—I must say, this is the smoothest residential purchase I’ve conducted in fifteen years. My wife and I are moving from Chicago on Tuesday. She’s already hired an interior designer to look at the living room space."
"The living room furniture is included, Mr. Henderson," I said, holding my body straight despite the dull ache still radiating from my surgical site. "As per our addendum, every piece of furniture currently on the premises, with the exception of the items in the second-floor nursery, becomes your legal property upon closing."
"Including the audio-visual installation in the basement media room?" Mr. Henderson asked, his eyes lighting up.
"Everything," I said smoothly. "The media room, the outdoor kitchen equipment, the lawn tractors, and the wine cellar collection."
Marcus slid the master deed across the glass table. "We just need your signature on page twelve, Emily. Once you sign, Vanessa will record the deed electronically with the county clerk. The transaction will be legally final as of twelve o'clock noon today."
I picked up the pen.
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
I signed my name—Emily Rose Thorne, Managing Trustee of Thorne Legacy Holdings LLC—with a clear, steady hand.
"Congratulations, Mr. Henderson," I said, sliding the document back across the table. "You now own 440 Hillcrest Lane."
"Thank you, Ms. Thorne," Henderson said, shaking my hand warmly. "When do you think you’ll have your remaining personal items out of the nursery?"
"The bonded movers are at the house right now," I replied, checking my watch. It was 10:30 AM. "They began at nine. They will be finished, and the house will be completely swept clean of my daughter's belongings, by eleven-thirty."
"And the previous key codes?" Henderson asked, pulling a sleek silver electronic key card from his inner pocket. "I intend to have the entire lock system replaced with my own security company's hardware first thing tomorrow morning."
"The old key codes were completely purged from the master server at eight o'clock this morning," I said, offering him a faint, cold smile. "No one possesses a working code to that house right now. Not even me."
At 11:15 AM, as I sat in the rear seat of a private car taking Clara and me back to our hotel suite, my phone screen lit up with an incoming email notification from the County Property Appraiser’s public database.
Public Record Update: Parcel 402-88-101 (440 Hillcrest Lane). Status: SOLD. Grantor: Thorne Legacy Holdings LLC. Grantee: Henderson Family Revocable Trust. Recorded Consideration: $3,200,000.00.
I saved the public record PDF to my phone's files.
Then, I pulled up Jason's contact information. I unblocked his number just long enough to send a single text message.
Attached to the message was the public county record of the sale, along with a high-resolution photograph of the signed master deed showing Mr. Arthur Henderson as the sole legal owner of the estate.
Beneath the attachments, I typed six words:

I figured something out. Keypad purged.
Then, I permanently blocked his number once again.
