Chapter 7 - The Document

Jason’s hands were shaking so hard he could barely tear open the heavy white paper of the envelope.
Evelyn and Sarah crowded around his shoulders, their eyes devouring the heavy, formal black lettering of the legal documents inside.
The first page was stamped with the official crest of the State Circuit Court:
IN RE: THE MARRIAGE OF EMILY ROSE THORNE AND JASON MATTHEW VANCE. TEMPORARY EMERGENCY ORDER OF PROTECTION AND EXCLUSIVE CUSTODY.
The order was explicit, clear, and absolute:
Petitioner Emily Rose Thorne is granted temporary sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Clara Rose Thorne-Vance.
Respondent Jason Matthew Vance is restrained from coming within 500 feet of the Petitioner, the minor child, or their temporary place of residence.
Respondent Jason Matthew Vance is strictly prohibited from contacting the Petitioner via phone, email, third-party messaging, or social media.
Finding of Fact: The Court finds credible evidence that Respondent abandoned Petitioner and newborn infant seventy-two hours post-surgery by locking Petitioner out of the primary residence during sub-freezing weather conditions while traveling out of state.
Jason’s legs felt like wet paper. He staggered backward two steps, sinking down onto the cold stone wall of the garden planter.
"She... she took Clara," Jason whispered, his eyes glazed over with horror. "She got a judge to give her sole custody?"
"Read the second document!" Evelyn demanded, her trembling fingers grabbing the second stapled packet from his lap. "Read it!"
The second document was forty pages long, printed on crisp bond paper.
SUMMONS AND PETITION FOR DISSOLUTON OF MARRIAGE.
Attached to the back of the divorce petition was a comprehensive financial ledger—a master accounting compiled by Vance, Sterling & Associates over the preceding ninety-six hours.
It detailed every single dollar I had brought into the marriage versus every dollar Jason had expended:
Initial Property Capitalization (440 Hillcrest): $2,400,000.00 (100% Thorne Legacy Trust).
Renovations & Structural Improvements (2022-2024): $380,000.00 (100% Thorne Legacy Trust).
Joint Account Deficit Recovery: $62,000.00 (Returned to Originating Account).
Unauthorized Secondary Charges (Fontainebleau Miami): $8,280.00 (Pending Collections against Jason M. Vance).
At the very bottom of the ledger was a single, bolded summary line written by my lead financial attorney:
NET MARITAL ESTATE ASSETS TO BE DIVIDED: $2,000.00. RESPONDENT LIABILITY TO PETITIONER FOR UNPAID HOUSEHOLD CONTRIBUTION: $114,000.00.
"Two thousand dollars?" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing across the quiet, empty gardens of Hillcrest Lane. "Two thousand dollars?! She sold a three-million-dollar estate and left my son with two thousand dollars?!"
"She didn't leave him two thousand dollars, ma'am," Mr. Henderson’s calm voice called out from the porch.
They looked up. Henderson was standing beside his contractors as the old mahogany door swung open, revealing the cavernous, empty interior of the mansion.
"Your son’s name is listed as a co-signor on the landscaping service contract for this estate," Henderson said, holding up a blue invoice he had pulled from the mailbox. "They haven't been paid in three months. The outstanding balance is three thousand four hundred dollars. So technically, he’s starting his new life fourteen hundred dollars in the red."
Henderson stepped across the threshold, turned around, and looked down at the three of them standing on his driveway.

"And now," Henderson said softly, "if you do not remove your rented Ford Fusion from my private driveway within ninety seconds, I will have the local police department tow it for unauthorized parking on private residential property."
He reached out, pulled the heavy mahogany door shut, and the sound of a new, digital electronic deadbolt clicking sharply into place echoed across the cold November air.
