Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala

One month later.

The Grand Ballroom of the Port Mercy Yacht Club was glittering with light. Hundreds of crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, illuminating tables covered in dark blue velvet linens, sterling silver centerpieces, and towering champagne pyramids.

It was the annual Marston Maritime Foundation Winter Gala—the most prestigious high-society event of the season in Port Mercy.

For weeks, the city’s elite had whispered incessantly about what would happen tonight. Everyone knew the Marston-Bennett wedding had been canceled a month prior under scandalously quiet circumstances. Everyone knew Cole Marston had suddenly vanished from the executive board of the family enterprise, replaced by senior Marston loyalists.

And everyone was dying to know where Emma Bennett had disappeared to.

At 8:30 PM, the heavy gilded doors at the front of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped forward, his voice echoing over the microphone.

“Presenting the CEO of Marston Holdings, Mr. Adrian Marston... and his guest, Miss Emma Bennett.”

A collective, audible gasp swept through the two hundred wealthy guests assembled in the room.

Walking through the doorway, her head held high, was Emma.

She was breathtaking. She wore a custom, floor-length emerald green silk gown that clung perfectly to her elegant silhouette, featuring an open back and a subtle slit along the left leg. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate, sophisticated updo, fastened with tiny diamond pins. Hanging around her neck was a mesmerizing vintage necklace of platinum and dark emeralds—an exquisite piece from the private Marston vault that had not been seen in public for thirty years.

And standing beside her, holding her hand securely in his large palm, was Adrian Marston.

He looked extraordinarily imposing in a tailored black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his silver-tinged temples adding to his commanding presence. But what shocked the room most was not his suit—it was the intense, possessive, and radiant devotion in his eyes whenever he turned to look at the woman beside him.

As they stepped onto the polished dance floor, whispers erupted across the room like a sudden flock of birds.

“Is that Emma Bennett?”

“Look at the emeralds around her neck! That’s the Marston Empress necklace!”

“She’s with Adrian?! What happened to Cole?!”

Emma felt the weight of two hundred pairs of eyes staring at her, but she didn't flinch. She felt Adrian’s broad hand resting against her back, giving her an iron anchor of strength.

“You’re turning every head in this room, Emma,” Adrian murmured softly against her ear, his deep voice sending a pleasant shiver down her spine.

“Is that a bad thing?” she asked playfully, glancing up at him with a mischievous spark in her dark eyes.

“It’s a dangerous thing,” Adrian corrected smoothly, a small, dark smile touching his lips. “Because every man in this room is suddenly realizing what a tragic mistake Cole made... and I am going to have to spend the rest of the evening reminding them that you belong with me.”

Before Emma could respond, a sudden commotion at the entrance of the ballroom drew the crowd’s attention away from the dance floor.

Standing near the coat check, attempting to push past two large security guards, was Cole.

He looked disastrous. He was wearing an ill-fitting, wrinkled suit, his eyes were bloodshot and dark, and he smelled strongly of alcohol even from twenty feet away.

Standing right behind him, wearing a cheap, tacky red cocktail dress, was Tessa.

“Let me in!” Cole shouted slurring his words as he tried to shove past the guards. “I’m a Marston! My name is on the building! I have a right to be here!”

The ballroom went dead quiet. Guests backed away, pulling out their phones to record the horrifying spectacle.

Cole’s eyes swept the room until they landed directly on Emma and Adrian standing in the center of the dance floor.

When Cole saw his ex-fiancé wearing the legendary Marston emeralds—the very emeralds his mother had promised would only be worn by the true matriarch of the family—his eyes bulged with drunken, hysterical rage.

“Emma!” Cole roared, pointing a shaking finger at her. “How could you do this to me?! You’re sleeping with my brother! You stole my life!”

Tessa pushed forward beside him, her eyes burning with jealous fury as she stared at Emma’s emerald necklace.

“Look at her!” Tessa shrieked to the gossiping crowd. “She played the victim! She acted like a broken angel while she was plotting with Adrian to steal Cole’s inheritance!”

The crowd gasped loudly.

Emma didn't flinch. She didn't retreat.

She slowly stepped out from behind Adrian, her emerald gown shimmering under the chandelier lights, and walked calmly toward the entrance of the ballroom.

Adrian walked right beside her, his presence radiating an absolute, terrifying authority that made the security guards stand up straighter.

Emma stopped five feet away from Cole and Tessa, looking at them both with cool, supreme indifference.

“Cole,” Emma said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. “You were stripped of your position because you embezzled corporate funds to rent hotel suites with my sister. You lost your home because you defaulted on your debts. No one stole your life, Cole. You threw it away.”

She turned her eyes onto Tessa, who flinched beneath Emma’s regal, unyielding gaze.

“And as for you, Tessa,” Emma continued smoothly. “Five weeks ago, you looked me in the eyes and said four words that ruined our family. You said, 'He chose me.'”

Emma glanced back at Adrian, offering him a warm, radiant smile before turning back to her sister.

“You were right, Tessa,” Emma said, her voice ringing out like a crystal bell across the grand ballroom. “Cole chose you. And in doing so, he made room for a real man to choose me.”

The crowd erupted into stunned, delighted applause.

Cole’s face went ash-white. Tessa looked as if she had been slapped across the mouth with an iron glove.

Adrian stepped forward, looking down at his pathetic younger brother with dark, absolute finality.

“Vance,” Adrian commanded smoothly.

Vance stepped forward instantly. “Sir?”

“Remove these two trespassers from the property. And call the police precinct to report Mr. Cole Marston for public intoxication and breach of peace.”

“No! Adrian, please!” Cole screamed as Vance and three large security guards grabbed him by the arms, dragging him backward out the heavy glass doors into the cold night air.

Tessa tried to run after him, weeping hysterically as high-society ladies scoffed and turned their backs on her.

The grand doors slammed shut, sealing the shame out into the night.

Adrian turned to face Emma, extending his hand toward her with exquisite, timeless grace.

“May I have this dance, Miss Bennett?” he asked softly.

May you like

Emma placed her small hand into his large, warm palm.

“I thought you’d never ask, Mr. Marston.”
