Chapter 9 - The Cliff at Port Mercy

Three months later.

The winter snow had melted from the high granite cliffs overlooking Port Mercy Harbor, giving way to the early green shoots of spring.

Emma stood on the edge of the scenic overlook at Marston Point—the very spot where Cole had proposed to her three years ago. The ocean below was a deep, brilliant blue, crashing rhythmically against the rocks beneath a warm, clear sky.

She was wearing a simple slate-grey dress, her dark hair blowing softly in the sea breeze.

She heard the quiet, confident crunch of leather shoes on the gravel path behind her.

Adrian walked up beside her. He was wearing a tailored charcoal coat over a crisp white shirt, his broad hands tucked casually into his pockets. He didn't speak immediately; he simply stood beside her, sharing the vast, peaceful view of the Atlantic Ocean.

“It feels completely different standing here now,” Emma said softly, turning her head to look at him.

Adrian looked down at her, his dark grey eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable tenderness.

“Different how?”

“When Cole proposed to me here three years ago,” Emma recalled, a small, reflective smile touching her lips, “I felt like I was stepping into a storm I had to constantly manage. I was always trying to keep him happy, always trying to fix his mistakes, always worrying if I was enough.”

She reached out, gently resting her hand against Adrian’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart beneath the wool coat.

“With you, Adrian... I never have to manage the storm. You are the wall that stops it.”

Adrian brought his large hand up, covering hers, his long fingers intertwining with hers tightly.

“You will never have to face a storm alone again, Emma,” Adrian murmured, his voice rich and low. “Not as long as I draw breath.”

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat.

Adrian did not drop to one knee with dramatic flare. He stood tall, solid, and powerful before her, opening the velvet box with exquisite care.

Inside sat a breathtaking, vintage solitaire ring—a brilliant five-carat blue diamond set in a delicate platinum band, sparkling like the ocean water beneath the sunlight.

“This ring did not come from the Marston family vault,” Adrian said softly, his eyes searching hers with profound intensity. “I did not inherit it. I purchased it myself fifteen years ago when I first took control of the company, holding onto it until I found a woman who possessed true grace, courage, and honor.”

He looked deeply into her dark eyes.

“I watched my brother take you for granted for three years, Emma. I stayed in the shadows, keeping my distance out of respect for family loyalty, while watching the finest woman in this city give her heart to a boy who couldn't appreciate it.”

Adrian lifted the ring from the box, holding it between his long fingers.

“I am done watching, Emma,” Adrian rasped, his voice filled with an overwhelming, raw emotion he had held back for years. “I want you to be my wife. Not to fix a mistake, not to spite my brother... but because I have been in love with you from the very first moment you walked into my life.”

Emma stood frozen on the cliff, tears of overwhelming joy spilling down her cheeks as his words washed over her soul.

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. “Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!”

Adrian slid the stunning blue diamond onto her left ring finger—a perfect fit.

He reached out, wrapped his strong arms around her waist, and lifted her off her feet, drawing her tightly against his broad chest as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future together forever on the high cliffs of Port Mercy.
