Chapter 3 - The Cluttered Ledger

Julian Rossi didn't scream as Enzo dragged him out of the penthouse, but the frantic, desperate scraping of his leather shoes against the polished concrete corridor echoed through the open doorway long after the heavy doors slammed shut.

Maya sat motionless in the massive leather armchair, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The room felt immense, silent, and suffocatingly quiet.

Adrian did not look shaken. He pulled a silver pocket watch from his vest, checked the time, and snapped it shut with a crisp metallic click.

"It appears," Adrian said smoothly, "that my half-brother is as incompetent at treason as he is at logistics."

Maya stared at him, her fingers clutching the edges of the cream-colored robe. "You... you just had your own brother arrested."

"I had my half-brother detained for interrogation," Adrian corrected, standing up from his desk. He walked over to a small mahogany credenza near the window, picked up a crystal decanter, and poured a cup of dark steaming liquid into a porcelain cup. He carried it over and set it on the small table beside her chair. "Chamomile and mint. It will keep you from going into shock."

Maya looked down at the cup. Steam rose from the amber tea, carrying a gentle scent that seemed entirely out of place in a room that had just witnessed a high-level syndicate betrayal.

"I'm not in shock," Maya lied, though her knees were trembling so violently beneath the robe that her large slippers were tapping against the floor.

"You are shaking, Miss Bennett," Adrian noted quietly, leaning against the edge of his massive desk, crossing his arms over his chest. "Which is entirely understandable. You have spent the last three hours exposing two major security failures in my organization and uncovering a mole inside my inner circle."

Maya took a slow, hesitant sip of the tea. The heat washed down her throat, easing the tight knot in her chest. "I didn't mean to uncover anything. I was just trying to mop a floor."

"The universe has a dark sense of humor," Adrian remarked softly. "Most of my high-paid intelligence consultants couldn't spot a federal port audit receipt if it was slapped across their faces. You spotted it from four feet away while wearing oversized slippers."

Maya set the tea cup down, looking up at him defensively. "I told you. My uncle worked the docks. When you grow up in a family where missing five hundred dollars means you don't eat for two weeks, you learn to read fine print fast. You read every receipt, every tax document, every hospital invoice, because you know the people at the top are always trying to find a way to screw you over."

Adrian studied her face in silence. The harsh fluorescent lights of the penthouse reflected off her dark, damp curls, highlighting the sharp intelligence in her eyes that no gray cleaning uniform could ever hide.

"Your brother," Adrian said abruptly. "Leo Bennett. Age twenty-one. Diagnosed with aplastic anemia two years ago."

Maya’s posture instantly went rigid. "Don't talk about my brother."

"He requires bi-weekly blood transfusions and expensive immunosuppressive therapy," Adrian continued, ignoring her warning. "The state insurance program cut off his coverage six weeks ago due to a clerical error regarding your mother's estate taxes."

Maya stood up from the chair, the oversized robe billowing around her like a sail. "I said, don't talk about him! My family's problems are none of your business!"

"They became my business the moment you stepped into my study, Maya," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute authority that forced her to stay where she stood. "You owe thirty-four thousand dollars to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital. The billing department has already threatened to sell the debt to a private collection agency—specifically, a collection agency owned by a subsidiary of the Moretti family."

Maya felt the air leave her lungs. The room seemed to spin slightly.

"What?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "No... no, it's a private hospital..."

"Owned by Donato Moretti’s shell companies," Adrian clarified, stepping closer to her until he was standing directly in front of her. "They were keeping your brother’s debt active on purpose. They were waiting for you or your mother to break, so they could offer you a 'favor' in exchange for information regarding my estate's floor plans."

Maya covered her mouth with her hand, a cold terror gripping her spine. The Moretti family hadn't just been targeting Adrian—they had been laying a trap around her family for months, waiting for the right moment to spring it.

"They knew I cleaned your house," Maya realized, her eyes wide with horror. "They knew..."

"They knew you were desperate," Adrian said gently. "And in my world, desperation is the most easily exploited currency."

He reached out, his long fingers gently grasping her wrist, lowering her hand away from her face. His skin was warm, his grip steady and unyielding.

"I am going to offer you a bargain, Maya Bennett," Adrian said softly, his grey eyes searching her face.

"I don't want your bargains," Maya whispered, though she didn't pull her hand away from his grip. "Every bargain in this city comes with a knife behind the back."

"Not mine," Adrian said calmly. "Tomorrow morning, my legal team will clear your brother's entire medical debt. He will be transferred to a private medical facility in Evanston under my direct protection. The best specialists in the country will handle his care, fully funded."

Maya stared at him, her heart thumping wildly against her ribs. "And what do you want from me?"

"I want your eyes," Adrian said.

Maya blinked, confused. "My... eyes?"

"My organization is filled with men who know how to shoot guns, clear docks, and enforce loyalty through violence," Adrian explained, his tone completely serious. "But it is also filled with blind spots. Men like Julian slip through the cracks because my lieutenants are too busy looking for sniper rifles to notice carbon receipts. I need someone inside my inner circle who notices details."

"You want me to be a spy?" Maya asked, incredulous. "I'm a maid!"

"You were a maid," Adrian corrected smoothly. "As of midnight, you are my personal administrative assistant. You will sit in my study, you will review my shipping manifests, you will inspect my estate’s operational reports, and you will tell me whenever something doesn't make sense."

Maya looked down at their hands. His fingers were still wrapped securely around her wrist, providing a strange, grounding warmth in the freezing penthouse.

"And if I say no?" Maya asked quietly. "If I just want my mop back?"

Adrian’s thumb brushed lightly over the pulse point on her wrist, a subtle gesture that sent a sudden spike of electricity straight up her arm.

"If you say no, I will fire you, pay off your brother's debt anyway, and have Enzo escort you safely back to your apartment," Adrian said softly. "Because despite what you may think of me, Maya, I do not force desperate women into my service."

Maya stared at him, completely caught off guard. She had expected threats, demands, or coercion. She had not expected chivalry from the most feared mob lord in Chicago.

She took a slow, deep breath, pulling her wrist gently from his grasp. She adjusted the thick cotton robe around her shoulders, looked out at the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline, and then looked back into Adrian Voss’s dark, waiting eyes.

"Two conditions," Maya stated firmly.

Adrian raised an eyebrow, a faint, intrigued smile playing on his lips. "You are bargaining with a crime boss while wearing my slippers, Miss Bennett. But go on."

"First," Maya said, holding up one finger. "My brother gets the Evanston facility, and he never knows where the money came from. He thinks it's a state grant."

"Done," Adrian agreed without hesitation.

"Second," Maya continued, holding up a second finger. "I don't wear suits. And I don't clean your bathrooms anymore."

Adrian let out a quiet, velvety laugh—a sound so rare and genuine that even the distant security guards near the elevator turned their heads in shock.

May you like

"Done," Adrian said softly. He extended his hand toward her once again, his expression softening into something remarkably close to warmth. "Welcome to the Voss Enterprise, Miss Bennett."

Maya looked at his hand, took a slow breath, and placed her fingers firmly into his grip.
