Chapter 7 - The Audit of the Heart

Three weeks later, the snow had begun to fall over the Lake Forest estate, blanketing the vast manicured lawns in a pristine layer of white.

In the second-floor guest suite, the defective bathroom pipe had been completely replaced with solid copper fixtures. The imported Italian marble in the west hallway had been restored to a mirror polish, and the antique Persian rug in the grand study showed no trace of ever having touched gray mop water.

Maya Bennett sat at her grand oak desk in the corner of Adrian’s primary study. She wore a stunning ivory cashmere sweater, dark trousers, and custom Italian leather pumps that fitted her perfectly.

On her screen sat the finalized acquisition papers for the Moretti family’s legitimate shipping assets, which had been fully absorbed into the Voss Enterprise network earlier that morning.

Across the room, Adrian stood near the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, holding two crystal glasses filled with warm, spiced apple cider.

He walked across the soft rug, setting one glass on her desk beside her laptop.

"You're working late, Miss Bennett," Adrian noted smoothly, taking a seat on the edge of her desk.

Maya leaned back in her chair, picking up the glass and taking a slow sip. "I’m reviewing the legal contracts for your new community medical foundation in South Chicago."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Is there a problem with the fine print?"

"None at all," Maya said, a warm, radiant smile illuminating her face. "The foundation is fully funded, the staff is hired, and the first hundred free treatment vouchers were delivered to my mother’s neighborhood this morning."

Adrian looked down at her, his storm-grey eyes filled with a soft, quiet adoration that he no longer bothered to hide from the world.

"Your brother Leo called me an hour ago," Adrian mentioned casually.

Maya looked up, surprised. "He called you directly?"

"He did," Adrian smiled faintly. "He informed me that his blood cell counts have reached normal levels for the first time in two years. He also asked if I was planning on marrying his sister, or if he needed to come down to Lake Forest and have a 'talk' with me."

Maya nearly choked on her cider, her face turning brilliant red. "He did not!"

"He did," Adrian insisted, his eyes sparkling with rare amusement. "He’s a very protective young man. I respect that."

Maya set her glass down, hiding her blush behind her hands. "I am going to kill him."

Adrian reached out, gently pulling her hands away from her face, holding her soft fingers in his large, warm grip. He pulled her up from her chair until she was standing between his knees as he sat on the edge of her desk.

"I gave him an honest answer, Maya," Adrian whispered softly, his hands coming up to rest gently around her waist.

Maya looked into his deep grey eyes, her heart fluttering violently against her ribs. "And what... exactly... did you tell my brother, Mr. Voss?"

Adrian leaned in, pressing his forehead gently against hers, his breath warm against her skin.

"I told him," Adrian murmured, "that I have been entirely at the mercy of his sister since the second she burst through my study door holding a mop."

Maya smiled, wrapping her arms securely around his neck, pulling him closer.

"Good answer," Maya whispered.

He kissed her then—a slow, tender, and deeply passionate kiss that tasted of sweet cinnamon and hot apple cider, erasing every lingering memory of cold rain, broken pipes, and dangerous shadow wars.

Downstairs, the estate was quiet and secure. The double walnut doors of the study were closed, not to keep out assassins or security breaches, but to lock in the warm, beautiful light of a future built on love, trust, and a maid who was never, ever going to be fired again.
