Chapter 5 - The Web Tightens

The emergency war room beneath the Lake Forest estate was filled with the low hum of encrypted radio transmitters and the sharp clatter of keyboard strokes. Maps of the greater Chicago metropolitan area were projected onto three massive wall screens, highlighted with red tactical markers showing the last known location of the ambushed prison transport.
Maya stood near the primary communications console, wearing a dark leather jacket over her silk blouse. She had refused Adrian’s order to stay in the upper residential quarters. If her name was out there, she wanted to see the threat coming.
Adrian stood at the center of the room, flanked by six of his most trusted tactical captains. His coat was off, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing strong forearms crossed over his chest.
"The ambush occurred at 9:14 AM on the entrance ramp to I-290," Enzo reported, tapping a tablet screen to display traffic camera footage. "Two heavy trucks boxed in our transport vehicle. Four shooters equipped with military-grade rifles disabled the engine block and pulled Julian out before the escort team could react."
"They didn't kill the escort team," Adrian noted, analyzing the footage with cold precision. "Which means this wasn't a hit. It was an extraction."
"Dominic Moretti wants information," Maya said, stepping closer to the display screens. "Julian was facing twenty years in federal prison for customs fraud. He’s terrified, he’s weak, and he’ll trade anything to save his own skin."
Adrian looked across the console at her. "Including the location of this estate."
"No," Maya argued softly, her mind working through the logic. "Julian knows the estate is heavily fortified. Dominic doesn't have the manpower to launch a direct assault on a fortress like this without bringing down every federal law enforcement agency in the Midwest. He won't attack the estate."
"Then what will he do?" Enzo asked, looking at her with newfound respect.
"He’ll target something outside the gates," Maya said, pointing to a blue marker on the map. "Something that hurts Adrian personally, but leaves no paper trail."
The room fell silent as the tactical captains looked at the map.
Suddenly, a red alert box flashed across the primary monitor screen. The private encryption channel linked to the Evanston medical facility chimed three times—a direct breach warning.
Maya’s blood turned to ice. "Leo..."
Adrian moved with lightning speed. He shoved past two captains, grabbing the primary comms headset from the console.
"Security Detail Alpha, report!" Adrian roared into the microphone. "Status on room 402!"
Static cracked over the speaker, followed by the heavy, panting voice of the lead guard stationed at the hospital.
"Boss! We have a situation! Two men disguised as medical transport staff attempted to access Mr. Bennett's room through the rear service elevator! We intercepted them in the hallway—shots fired!"
Maya grabbed the edge of the console, her knuckles turning white. "Is my brother okay? Tell me he’s okay!"
"The boy is secure!" the guard shouted over the sound of distant sirens in the background. "We locked down the entire fourth floor! The suspects fled toward the underground parking bay in a stolen ambulance!"
Adrian let out a slow, controlled breath, his posture rigid with fury. "Hold your positions. Federal agents are already en route to your location. Double the perimeter guard."
He clicked off the comms channel, tossing the headset onto the desk. He turned his gaze slowly toward Maya.
She was pale, her hands shaking, her eyes wide with a terrifying blend of panic and rage. They had targeted her innocent, sick brother. The line had been crossed.
"They tried to take Leo," Maya whispered, her voice trembling violently. "They tried to use my brother to get to you..."
Adrian walked over to her, stepping between her and the glaring monitor screens. He reached out, placing his large hands firmly on her shoulders, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.
"Listen to me, Maya," Adrian said, his voice low, steady, and filled with an absolute, immovable promise. "Your brother is safe. My men held the line. No one is going to touch him. Do you hear me?"
Maya looked into his fierce grey eyes, feeling the sheer, terrifying strength of the man standing before her. The panic in her chest began to give way to something far sharper—a cold, burning fury that matched his own.
"I hear you," Maya whispered, her jaw setting into a hard line. "Now tell me how we kill Dominic Moretti."
A slow, lethal smile spread across Adrian Voss’s face—a smile that promised total, uncompromising retribution.
"We don't just kill him, Maya," Adrian whispered softly, his fingers tightening gently on her shoulders. "We dismantle everything he has ever touched."
He turned to Enzo, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute command.
"Activate the Cicero protocol," Adrian ordered. "Contact every port authority inspector, every union boss, and every precinct commander on our payroll. As of ten o'clock today, the Moretti family no longer operates in the city of Chicago."
"What about Julian?" Enzo asked.
Adrian grabbed his suit jacket from the back of a chair, slipping it back over his shoulders.
"Julian made his choice when he let them pull him out of that transport," Adrian said coldly. "We trace the stolen ambulance. We find where Dominic is holding him. And then, Miss Bennett and I are going to pay them a personal visit."

Maya looked at Adrian, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding resolve. She didn't ask for a gun. She didn't ask for a vest. She simply adjusted her leather jacket, stood tall at his side, and said:
"I’ll get my shoes."
