Chapter 8 - The Specter

Out of the darkness of the stairwell stepped The Specter—Morozov’s elite assassin. He was tall, dressed in matte-black combat armor, holding a custom tactical shotgun.

Without a word, the assassin fired—BOOM!

The shot blew away part of the concrete wall beside Gideon.

Gideon returned fire, but the assassin moved with lethal agility, rolling behind a heavy steel support pillar and closing the distance rapidly.

Gideon fired his last three rounds, but the assassin’s armor absorbed the impacts. The Specter lunged forward, slamming his heavy shotgun into Gideon’s arm, knocking the pistol from his hand.

Gideon countered with a brutal knife-hand strike to the assassin’s throat, but The Specter blocked it, grabbing Gideon’s lapels and driving him hard against the brick wall.

The two men engaged in a terrifying, close-quarters struggle for life and death.

Gideon was still recovering from the poisoning, his physical strength not yet at its peak. The assassin gained the upper hand, forcing Gideon onto his knees, wrapping a heavy steel cable around Gideon’s neck, pulling it tight.

Gideon gasped for air, his veins bulging as he fought against the choking metal wire.

“GIDEON!” Norah screamed.

She looked at the server room panel. The override bar had reached ninety percent.

She looked at the floor near her feet—a heavy, brass fire extinguisher sat mounted on the wall.

Norah didn't think. She didn't hesitate.

She ripped the heavy brass extinguisher off the wall, sprinted across the concrete corridor, and swung it with all the force in her body straight into the side of the assassin’s helmet—CRACK!

The reinforced visor shattered.

The assassin stumbled back, his grip on the cable loosening.

Gideon seized the moment. He reached up, grabbed the assassin’s tactical knife from his vest, and drove it deep into the joint of the assassin’s shoulder armor.

The Specter let out a muffled roar of pain, collapsing onto the concrete.

Gideon pulled the knife free, standing over the fallen assassin, gasping for breath, his eyes cold and lethal.

Before Gideon could deliver the final blow, the server panel let out a loud, electronic chime—BEEP! BEEP!

SECURITY GRID RESTORED. EMERGENCY SHUTTERS ENGAGED.

Across the entire estate, heavy steel blast doors slammed shut over every window and door, trapping the remaining attackers in the courtyard where Arthur’s forces swept through and eliminated them.

The battle was over.

Gideon looked at the unconscious assassin on the floor, then turned to Norah.

She stood near the wall, breathing heavily, holding the dented brass fire extinguisher, her dress stained with plaster dust and blood.

Gideon walked over to her. He didn't say anything. He pulled the heavy extinguisher from her hands, set it aside, and pulled her tightly into his arms, burying his face in her hair.

“You hit an assassin with a fire extinguisher,” Gideon whispered, a low, breathy laugh escaping his chest.

“I told you I hate broken things,” Norah whispered back, trembling in his arms as the adrenaline finally began to fade.

Gideon pulled back, looking into her eyes with a love so fierce it took her breath away.

“You’re insane, Norah Blake,” he murmured softly.

“I’m your risk analyst,” she replied with a fragile smile.

Gideon kissed her deeply, holding her close as the sirens above slowly faded into the quiet victory of the night.
