Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE RIFT

The metallic click of heavy iron bolts sliding into place echoed through the high-ceilinged grand foyer of the Vale estate. Armed security officers clad in dark tactical suits took up defensive positions at every window and doorway, their expressions tight with lethal focus.

Inside the private study, the air was suffocatingly tense. Rain hammered violently against the reinforced glass windows, echoing the storm raging inside Adrian’s mind.

Elena stood in the center of the Persian rug, drawing Lily close to her skirt. Her hands trembled slightly, but her eyes held a fierce, maternal protectiveness that Adrian couldn't ignore. For eight months, she had worked in his mansion as a quiet, unobtrusive housemaid. She had cleaned his mahogany desks, folded his linens, and kept her head down. He had known her only as a reliable employee with a gentle demeanor and a orphaned niece—or so he had believed.

"You need to start talking, Elena," Adrian said, his voice dangerously smooth as he walked over to his desk, setting the photograph down under the desk lamp. "And you need to start with why my late sister-in-law's daughter is living under my roof under your care."

Elena swallowed hard, her throat dry. She looked down at Lily, who was busy chewing on the faded ear of her pink stuffed rabbit, blissfully unaware of the dangerous men surrounding them.

"Claire was my cousin, Mr. Vale," Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly before she forced it to steady. "When she died three years ago from aggressive cancer, she left Lily to me. She made me swear on her deathbed that I would never bring Lily anywhere near New York. She said the Vale family was toxic—that if your syndicate found out about Lily, or about Daniel, it would mean their death sentences."

Adrian’s jaw tightened until the muscles flexed visibly. "If she wanted you to stay away from me, why did you apply for a job in my house?"

"Because I ran out of money!" Elena blurted out, tears of frustration shining in her eyes. "Lily was sick last year. She needed specialized medical care that I couldn't afford on a waitress's salary. I heard the Vale estate paid three times the standard wage for domestic staff. I took a fake surname on my application and took the risk. I planned to work here for one year, save enough for Lily's medical fund, and disappear."

Adrian stepped closer, his imposing six-foot-two frame towering over her. "And what about the envelope behind the portrait? How did it get there?"

Elena shook her head frantically. "I don't know! I swear to God, Mr. Vale, I've never touched that portrait! I didn't even know that photograph existed until Lily pointed at it today!"

Adrian studied her face. He had interrogated corrupt politicians, rival cartel bosses, and treacherous lieutenants for over fifteen years. He knew the subtle twitches of a liar. But looking into Elena's wide, terrified hazel eyes, he saw only raw, desperate truth.

He turned back to the photograph. Noah. Claire. And a baby boy wrapped in a blue blanket.

"Daniel," Adrian muttered softly. "Where is the boy, Elena?"

Elena hesitated, her breath catching in her throat. "Claire... Claire didn't have Daniel with her when she died. Years ago, before Lily was even born, when the fire happened... Claire told me that Noah took the boy and went into hiding. She said Noah made her take Lily and run in the opposite direction so that whoever was hunting them couldn't kill both children at once."

"Hunting them?" Adrian's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Who was hunting them? Fourteen years ago, my father ruled this city. Noah was his golden child. No one would have dared touch him."

Before Elena could answer, the heavy double doors of the study creaked open. Marcus, Adrian’s trusted head of security, stepped into the room with a tablet in hand, his face unusually pale.

"Boss," Marcus said, his tone grim. "We just ran a trace on that incoming call."

"Where came from?" Adrian demanded.

"It wasn't a burner phone, boss," Marcus replied, handing the tablet to Adrian. "It came from a secure server routing through a private medical facility in upstate New York. A psychiatric sanatorium called Saint Jude’s Haven."

Adrian stared at the address on the screen. Saint Jude’s Haven was an exclusive, high-security facility—and one of the primary institutions funded by the Moretti family, the Vale syndicate’s oldest and most ruthless rivals.

"Check the patient registry for Saint Jude's," Adrian ordered coldly. "Now."

"I already did, boss," Marcus said quietly, shooting a quick glance at Elena and the little girl. "There's a patient admitted fourteen years ago under a john doe profile. The medical bills are paid anonymously through an offshore account. But boss... the attending doctor listed on the admission sheet is Dr. Victor Vance."

Adrian’s blood turned to ice. Victor Vance was the personal physician of Sal Moretti—the man who had waged a bloody turf war against Adrian’s father fourteen years ago.

"My brother didn't die in that car fire," Adrian said, his voice dropping to an ominous whisper as the pieces of the terrible puzzle began to align. "Sal Moretti didn't kill him. He took him."
