Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

The tension inside the cavernous foundry snapped like a drawn bowstring.

Daniel stood frozen between the two men—the mob boss who had raised him in a world of lies, and the uncle he had been trained to hate. His eyes darted frantically from Sal Moretti on the high catwalk down to the photograph held in Adrian’s hand.

"Daniel," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, soothing pitch, refusing to look up at Moretti's armed guards. "Look at the picture, son. Look at the man standing beside your mother."

With shaking hands, Daniel took two steps forward and grabbed the photograph from Adrian's fingers. He held it up under the dim hanging light.

There, stamped in clear, unmistakable detail, was a younger Noah, smiling warmly as he wrapped his arm around Claire, who was cradling a tiny infant wrapped in a blue blanket. On the back, written in dark blue ink, was his mother’s handwriting:

To my sweet Daniel—if you are reading this, know that your father Noah loved you more than life itself. Never let the shadows take you.

A heavy tear spilled from Daniel's eye, washing away a smudge of dirt on his cheek. The handwriting was identical to the old letters his mother had left in the small wooden box he kept hidden under his mattress.

"She... she wrote this?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

"Yes," Adrian said softly. "She wrote it before Moretti took you."

Up on the catwalk, Sal Moretti’s face twisted into a snarl of pure rage. "Enough of this sentimental garbage! The boy is useless! Kill them both!"

The mercenaries raised their assault rifles, pointing them down toward the floor!

"Get down!" Adrian roared.

In a fraction of a second, Adrian grabbed Daniel by his tactical jacket, throwing his heavy body over the boy as a hail of gunfire erupted from above!

Bullets tore into the concrete floor around them, spraying sparks and stone chips into the air. Adrian pulled his weapon, firing three rapid shots upward toward the catwalk, forcing the mercenaries to duck behind the steel support beams for cover.

Outside the foundry, a sudden barrage of heavy gunfire signaled that Marcus and the Vale security team had engaged Moretti’s outer guards. The siege of Pier 42 had begun.

Adrian dragged Daniel behind a massive iron smelting furnace, pressing the boy back against the thick metal plating.

"Are you hit?" Adrian asked urgently, inspecting Daniel’s shoulders and chest with swift, practiced hands.

Daniel shook his head, his wide brown eyes staring at Adrian in complete shock. "You... you covered me. You protected me."

"You're my family, Daniel," Adrian said grimly, reloading his sidearm with a swift, mechanical rhythm. "I lost your father. I am not losing you."

A sudden wave of emotion broke through Daniel's hardened exterior. The fourteen years of carefully constructed hatred crumbled into dust, replaced by the terrifying realization that he had been used as a pawn by a monster.

"Sal... Sal told me my father died in a shootout with you," Daniel choked out, tears streaming down his face. "He said you wanted all the Vale fortune for yourself..."

"Sal wanted the Vale fortune," Adrian corrected firmly, looking into his nephew's eyes. "My brother Noah tried to walk away from the syndicate to give you and your mother a normal life. Sal couldn't let that happen. He killed Noah to send a message to my father, and he kept you as a contingency plan."

Above them, the heavy metallic footsteps of Moretti’s men echoed as they began descending the iron stairs toward the ground floor.

"Adrian!" Marcus's voice crackled through Adrian's earpiece. "We've breached the south entrance! We're moving to your position, but Moretti has snipers on the roof!"

"Suppress the roof!" Adrian commanded into his comms. "I'm securing the target!"

Adrian looked at Daniel, putting a reassuring hand on the boy's shoulder. "Can you run?"

May you like

Daniel wiped the tears from his face, a sudden spark of his father's fierce courage igniting in his eyes. He picked up his fallen handgun, checking the chamber with a practiced motion. "I can run."

"Good," Adrian smiled faintly. "Follow me. We're going to end this."
