Chapter 8 - THE MANSION’S HEALING

Two weeks later.
The morning sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm, golden light over the sprawling gardens of the Vale estate. The dark, suffocating tension that had hung over the mansion for years seemed to melt away in the summer breeze.
Inside the grand dining room, an unfamiliar sound echoed through the halls: the sound of children laughing.
Lily sat at the long mahogany table, her face messy with maple syrup as she tried to stack pancakes into a towering pyramid. Sitting beside her was Daniel, wearing a clean navy sweater and jeans. His dark hair was neatly cut, and the haunted, guarded look in his eyes had begun to soften into youthful curiosity.
He was patiently helping Lily place a strawberry on top of her pancake tower, smiling faintly as the little girl clapped her hands in delight.
Standing by the sideboard, pouring fresh orange juice, was Elena. She wore a simple cream-colored dress, her hair pulled back into a soft braid. She looked radiant, her hazel eyes sparkling as she watched the two children interact.
Adrian stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame, holding a cup of black coffee. He wore a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking remarkably relaxed, his hard features softened by a deep, quiet contentment.
Elena walked over to him, handing him a glass of juice, her hand lingering against his arm.
"How are they doing?" Adrian asked softly, his eyes fixed on Daniel.
"Better every day," Elena whispered, smiling up at him. "Daniel spent three hours in the library yesterday reading your father's old history books. He's incredibly smart, Adrian. He just needed a safe place to grow."
"He has a safe place now," Adrian said, looking down at her. "They both do."
Elena looked at him, her heart swelling with an emotion she could no longer deny. Over the past fortnight, Adrian had completely transformed the estate. He had dismantled the aggressive mob protocols, legalised his family's vast business holdings into legitimate corporate enterprises, and dedicated his life to ensuring a peaceful future for Daniel and Lily.
He was no longer just the feared mafia boss of New York; he was a protector, a guardian, and a man capable of extraordinary warmth.
"Thank you, Adrian," Elena said softly, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "For giving Lily her brother back. For giving us a family."
Adrian set his coffee cup down on the side table, taking her hand in his, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a slow, tender kiss.
"You don't have to thank me, Elena," Adrian murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense devotion. "You walked into this dark house with nothing but your kindness and a little girl, and you healed a broken man. You brought light back into my life."
He pulled her slightly closer, his other hand resting gently at her waist. "I don't want you to be my domestic housemaid anymore, Elena."
Elena teased him with a soft smile. "Are you firing me, Mr. Vale?"
"No," Adrian smiled back—a rare, breathtaking smile. "I'm asking you to stay as my equal. As my partner. As my wife."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She stared into his deep, sincere eyes, seeing the truth of his soul laid bare before her.
"Yes," Elena whispered, tears of joy filling her eyes. "Yes, Adrian. I'll stay."
