Chapter 10 - The Promise of Protection

One year later.
The grand gardens of the Moretti estate were decorated with white silk ribbons, silver balloons, and flower arrangements for a grand celebration.
It was Clara and Sofia’s first birthday.
Over fifty guests—high-ranking community leaders, family friends, and estate staff—gathered around a massive birthday cake decorated with two tiny pink tiaras.
Elena stood on the terrace, wearing a stunning emerald silk dress, looking happier and healthier than she ever had in her life. She was no longer the terrified, broken woman who had arrived at the gates in the rain; she was the confident, respected director of the Vance-Moretti Children's Foundation, managing millions in charitable aid across Illinois.
Salvatore stood beside her, wearing a navy tailored suit, holding little Clara on his hip while Sofia sat comfortably on Elena’s arm.
"They're growing up so fast," Elena murmured softly, watching Sofia reach for the shiny ribbons hanging from the canopy.
"They have your eyes," Salvatore said, looking at Elena with an open, deep affection that had grown steadily over the past twelve months. "And your strength."
"They wouldn't be here without you, Salvatore," Elena whispered, stepping closer to him, her shoulder brushing against his.
Salvatore turned his head, his hazel eyes filled with a quiet, unwavering devotion.
"When you came to my gate that night, Elena, I thought I was just paying back an old debt," Salvatore confessed softly, setting Clara gently down into her playpen before taking Elena’s free hand in his. "But over this past year, watching you rebuild your life, watching these little girls bring light into this dark house... I realized something."
Elena held her breath, her heart beating fast. "What?"
"You didn't just bring your daughters to my house that night," Salvatore murmured, his fingers gently caressing her knuckles. "You brought me a family."
Elena looked into his eyes, seeing no trace of "The Reaper"—only the fierce, protective, loving man who had shielded her when her world fell apart.

"We aren't going anywhere, Salvatore," Elena promised softly, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "This is our home now."
From across the lawn, guests clapped and raised their glasses in a toast to the twin girls who had once been rejected for their gender, but had now become the heart and pride of the most powerful dynasty in Chicago—safe, loved, and protected for a lifetime.
