Chapter 9 - A New Legacy

Three days later.
The morning sun broke through the clouds over the Moretti estate, bathing the expansive green gardens in warm golden light.
Elena sat on a white marble bench near the fountain, wearing an elegant cream-colored sweater and dark trousers. Her bruises were beginning to fade, and for the first time in eight years, the deep, suffocating weight of fear was gone from her chest.
Beside her, Clara and Sofia slept soundly in a pristine white double stroller provided by the estate staff.
Footsteps sounded along the gravel path.
Salvatore walked over, carrying a leather briefcase. He stopped beside the bench, looking down at the two babies sleeping peacefully under the sun.
"How are you feeling today, Elena?" he asked gently.
"Better," Elena said, offering a small, genuine smile. "The doctor said my ribs are healing well. I... I don't know how to thank you, Salvatore."
Salvatore sat down beside her on the marble bench, opening the briefcase. He pulled out a set of silver keys and a thick leather folder.
"You don't need to thank me," Salvatore said softly. "This is yours."
He handed her the folder.
Elena opened it, her eyes widening in disbelief as she read the legal documents inside. The Romano estate, the Chicago import-export company, and three offshore trust funds totaling twelve million dollars were all listed under her name and her daughters'.
"Marco signed everything over," Salvatore explained. "He has left Chicago permanently. He will never bother you again."
Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes, but this time they were tears of overwhelming relief. "He... he gave everything up?"
"He didn't have a choice," Salvatore said, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with intense warmth. "Your father saved my family's legacy years ago, Elena. Today, I have secured yours."

Elena looked down at her twin daughters, touching their tiny hands. "They will grow up knowing they are loved. They will never feel worthless."
"They will grow up as princesses of this city," Salvatore added softly, reaching out to gently touch Clara’s tiny cheek. "And no man will ever make them feel small."
