Chapter 4 - The Reaper's Sanctuary

The massive wrought-iron gates swung open slowly.
Elena drove the car up a winding cobblestone driveway lined with ancient oak trees until she stopped in front of a grand limestone mansion. Armed men in dark suits stood at every vantage point, their eyes trained on her vehicle.
When Elena opened her car door, her knees buckled. She collapsed onto the wet driveway, clutching the two infant carriers against her chest.
Footsteps echoed across the stone pavement.
A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out from the shadows beneath the grand porch. He wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit without a tie, his dark hair slicked back, his sharp hazel eyes cutting through the darkness like blade steel.
Salvatore Moretti.
He looked down at the battered woman kneeling in the rain, then at the two tiny infants tucked inside the pink blankets.
"Who did this to you?" Salvatore asked. His voice was low, deep, and carried a quiet, terrifying resonance that commanded absolute silence.
"Marco..." Elena choked out, her vision dimming at the edges. "My husband... he beat me because... because I gave him daughters instead of a son."
Salvatore froze.
For a fraction of a second, something dark and dangerous flickered across his icy features. He stepped forward, kneeling down in the cold rain without regard for his expensive suit, and gently took both infant carriers into his powerful hands.
He looked at the two sleeping babies, then back at Elena, whose eyes were fluttering closed from exhaustion and blood loss.
"Your father saved my father’s life in Sicily, Elena," Salvatore said softly, reaching out to gently brush a lock of wet hair from her bruised forehead. "A Moretti never forgets a debt."
Elena looked up into his hazel eyes, finding a strange, unyielding promise resting within them.
"Save my girls..." she whispered. "Please..."

"You are safe now," Salvatore promised, his voice carrying the authority of an absolute ruler. "Both you and your daughters."
Elena’s world went completely dark.
