Chapter 5 - The Innocent Asset

At 07:00 Wednesday morning, the sun broke through the coastal fog, bathing the estate in a bright, deceptive warmth.

In the small cottage near the eastern gate—the quarters assigned to the groundskeeping staff—Caleb sat at a small wooden kitchen table. Sitting across from him was his daughter, Lily. She was nine years old, with dark brown hair tied in a neat ponytail and sharp, intelligent gray eyes that mirrored her father’s. She was quietly eating a bowl of oatmeal while reviewing a stack of flashcards.

A soft knock sounded at the cottage door.

Caleb didn't reach for a weapon, but his body adjusted instantly as he walked to the door and pulled it open. Seraphina stood on the porch, wearing a dark blue business suit, looking immaculate to the outside world, though the faint dark circles under her eyes betrayed her sleepless night.

"Ms. Vale," Caleb said, stepping back. "Come in."

Seraphina stepped into the modest, impeccably clean room. Her gaze fell on Lily, who looked up from her flashcards with polite curiosity.

"Lily," Caleb said softly, "this is Ms. Vale. She owns the house we're working at."

Lily stood up immediately, offering a polite, well-mannered nod. "Good morning, Ms. Vale. Thank you for letting us stay in the cottage. The garden is very big."

Seraphina felt a sudden, sharp pang in her heart. Looking at this little girl—a child who had lost her mother to Marcus Vance’s corporate greed—she realized the true cost of the war she was wrapped up in.

"Good morning, Lily," Seraphina said, her voice dropping into a rare, gentle tone. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Your father is doing wonderful work with our trees."

"He's very good at fixing things," Lily said simply, sitting back down and returning to her work.

Caleb gestured toward the small back porch. Seraphina nodded and stepped outside with him, out of earshot of the girl.

"I’ve arranged for a private transport to take Lily to a secure location in Maine today," Seraphina whispered, pulling a paper envelope from her coat pocket. "My personal pilot will fly her out from a private airfield in Bedford. She’ll be accompanied by two off-duty state troopers I trust with my life."

Caleb looked at the envelope, then looked at Seraphina. For the first time since she had met him, a look of genuine vulnerability crossed his face.

"She doesn't know about any of this," Caleb said quietly. "She thinks her mother died in a normal car accident. I’ve kept her clean of the work."

"She will be safe, Caleb," Seraphina swore, placing her hand gently on his arm. "I promise you on my daughter’s life. Lily will be protected until this is over."

Caleb looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then met her eyes. "Thank you, Seraphina." It was the first time he had used her first name.

"Gideon approached me at the main house an hour ago," Seraphina continued, her professional demeanor returning. "He asked if we could schedule an extra perimeter maintenance walk tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. He claimed there was a glitch in the optical sensors near the rose hedge."

"He’s setting his men into position," Caleb said, his voice hardening back into military precision. "He wants his team near the eastern gate so they can pretend to respond to an intrusion after the abduction team has already cleared the fence."

"What is my role?" she asked.

"You go to your board meeting tomorrow at 09:30 downtown, just like normal," Caleb instructed. "You drive your usual armored vehicle with Gideon’s driver. Make sure Marcus sees you in that boardroom."

Seraphina frowned. "And leave Maribel here?"

"Maribel won't be here," Caleb said, a cold smile touching his lips. "Maribel will be in the safe room beneath your study by 09:00. But the people watching through that rose hedge camera won't know that."

"How?"

Caleb pulled a small, high-density memory stick from his pocket. "I spent three hours last night creating a deep-fake holographic loop using the optical data from your bird camera. We're going to feed a live-rendered image of Maribel sitting on that bench onto their receiver. They’ll be breaching a position guarded by air and light."
