Chapter 9 - Checkmate

In the top-floor boardroom in Boston, the atmosphere had turned into a tomb.
At 10:22, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open. Two federal agents in dark suits walked in, followed by three local police officers.
The board members gasped, several of them standing up in confusion.
Marcus Vance slammed his hand on the table. "What is the meaning of this interruption?! This is a private executive session!"
The lead FBI agent paid no attention to Marcus. He walked straight to the head of the table, stopped beside Seraphina, and handed her a encrypted mobile terminal.
"Ms. Vale," the agent said. "The estate is entirely secure. The team was neutralized without incident. Mr. Hale is in custody, along with four members of a private security firm registered in Panama."
Seraphina took a slow, deep breath, feeling a massive weight lift from her chest. "And my daughter?"
"She is safe in the holding room, completely unaware of any disruption."
Seraphina stood up slowly. She picked up her glass tablet, tapped a button, and projected a file onto the massive 4K teleconferencing screen at the end of the room.
Documents, bank wire transfers, encrypted email logs, and vehicle registration records filled the screen in agonizing detail—tracing the line directly from Aether Security to Marcus Vance's personal account, linking him to both the extortion threats and the hit-and-run in Norfolk.
The board members stared at the screen in absolute horror.
"Marcus," Seraphina said, her voice dropping like a heavy steel blade across the quiet room. "You are relieved of your duties as Vice Chairman. You are removed from the board effective immediately. And you are under arrest for attempted kidnapping, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Marcus stared at the screen, his face turning the color of ash. He looked at the federal agents, then looked at Seraphina, his mouth opening and closing as if he were trying to find words that no longer existed.
"Seraphina... please," Marcus stammered, his voice trembling violently as the agents stepped up behind his chair. "You don't understand... the financial pressures... the board was going to oust me..."
"Take him away," Seraphina said, turning her back on him.
As the handcuffs clicked into place behind Marcus Vance's back, he was led out of the boardroom in complete silence, surrounded by the men and women he had attempted to manipulate for power.
Seraphina looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the harbor below. The sun was finally breaking through the gray clouds, casting brilliant golden light across the water.
