Chapter 8 - The Funnel

At 10:15, the breaching team hit the eastern wall of the estate.

Using a quiet pneumatic ladder, four men scaled the brick barrier, dropped silently into the thick soil of the rose garden, and raised their weapons. They moved in a wedge formation, sweeping their sights across the lawn toward the bench where the holographic projection of Maribel was playing its seamless, pre-recorded loop.

"Target visual," the team leader whispered into his throat mic. "Moving to secure asset."

They reached the bench. The leader reached out a gloved hand to grab the girl's shoulder—and his hand passed straight through a shimmering beam of light.

"What the—"

Before the team leader could finish his sentence, the ground beneath them erupted.

Caleb Rowan didn't use lethal explosives inside the garden. He used military-grade flash-bang suppression charges buried eighteen inches beneath the mulch.

A blinding flash of white light accompanied by a 170-decibel concussion blast tore through the rose garden. The four mercenaries were instantly knocked off their feet, their night-vision goggles overloaded, their senses completely shattered by the pressure wave.

From the high branches of the elm tree above, Caleb dropped down like a shadow.

He hit the ground in a low roll, coming up with a modified combat shotgun loaded with non-lethal heavy beanbag rounds. Before the team leader could recover his breath, Caleb struck him across the helmet with the butt of the weapon, driving him unconscious into the dirt.

The second mercenary tried to raise his carbine. Caleb stepped inside the man's guard, seized the weapon's barrel, twisted it downward to dislocate the attacker's thumb, and delivered a devastating knee strike to his ribs, followed by a short elbow to the jaw. The man collapsed like a sack of stones.

The remaining two mercenaries, still half-blinded by the flash-bangs, tried to retreat back toward the wall.

"Freeze!" a voice boomed from the garden path.

Gideon Hale stood there, his weapon drawn, flanked by two of his private security guards. Gideon had rushed to the garden expecting to see a successful abduction—instead, he found four elite mercenaries broken on the grass, and a single groundskeeper standing over them holding a combat shotgun.

"Drop the weapon, Rowan!" Gideon shouted, his hands shaking slightly as he aimed his pistol at Caleb's chest. "You're out of your depth!"

Caleb slowly lowered the shotgun, his dark eyes fixing on Gideon with a look of terrifying, cold amusement.

"You're late, Gideon," Caleb said softly. "And your driver downtown just got picked up by state police."

Gideon’s face went white. "What?"

Caleb raised his left hand and pressed a button on his wrist comms.

Behind Gideon, the heavy glass doors of the sunroom swung open. Six armed officers from the Massachusetts State Police Tactical Unit, led by an FBI Special Agent in a windbreaker, poured onto the patio with weapons raised.

"Gideon Hale!" the lead agent shouted. "Drop your weapon! On the ground! Now!"

Gideon looked behind him at the overwhelming force of federal agents, then looked back at Caleb. "How... how did you do this?"

"You forgot the first rule of tactical security," Caleb said, stepping forward and kicking the unconscious mercenary's carbine away. "Never build a blind spot you don't own."
