Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

Thursday morning arrived under an overcast sky that hung low and heavy over the Massachusetts coast.
At 08:45, Seraphina walked down the grand hallway of her mansion, holding Maribel’s hand. The little girl was holding her favorite stuffed bear, oblivious to the high-stakes chess match unfolding around her.
They stopped in front of the heavy wood paneling inside Seraphina’s private study. Seraphina pressed her palm against a biometric scanner hidden behind a leather-bound edition of The Wealth of Nations. The paneling slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss, revealing a brightly lit, comfortable safe room equipped with independent air filtration, communications, and live monitoring feeds.
"Maribel, sweetheart," Seraphina said, kneeling down and looking into her daughter's brown eyes. "I need you to stay in this room with Clara for a few hours. You have your movies, your drawing books, and plenty of snacks."
"Is this a game, Mommy?" Maribel asked, tilting her head.
"It’s a special security drill," Seraphina said, kissing her daughter’s forehead gently. "No matter what you hear outside, you stay right here until I come back to get you. Do you understand?"
"I promise," Maribel said, hugging her bear tightly.
Seraphina stepped out, watched the paneling slide back into place, and sealed the lock.
Ten minutes later, she walked down the front steps of the mansion, where a black executive SUV was idling. Gideon Hale stood by the open rear door, wearing a sharp dark suit with a subtle tactical bulge beneath his jacket.
"Good morning, Ms. Vale," Gideon said, offering his usual professional smile. "Traffic to the downtown office looks clear. We should have you at the headquarters building by 09:25."
"Thank you, Gideon," Seraphina said smoothly, stepping into the leather interior. "Are the garden patrols fully covered today?"
"Absolutely," Gideon lied without batting an eye. "I’ve assigned extra personnel to the eastern perimeter. Nothing gets through that garden on my watch."
"I'm glad to hear that," Seraphina said, leaning back as the heavy door clicked shut.
As the SUV pulled down the long stone driveway toward the main gates, Seraphina glanced out the tinted window. Standing near the edge of the lawn, holding a pair of heavy hedge clippers, was Caleb Rowan. He didn't look at the car. He didn't look at Gideon. He was watching the treeline near the eastern wall with the cold, absolute focus of a predator waiting for its prey to enter the killing zone.
