Chapter 10 - The Choice on the Ridge

The silence in the cabin was so thick only the crackle of the fireplace and the sound of the howling wind outside remained.

Amelia looked at Gabriel—the man who had offered her a hand in the rain, the man who had worn a mask of perfect devotion for eight years while quietly building a cage far smaller, far darker than the one she had lived in.

Then she looked at Luca—the broad-shouldered, cold-eyed man who had left her on the sidewalk, but who now stood before a loaded gun without a single weapon in his hands, his dark eyes filled with a desperate, bleeding honesty he had never shown another living soul.

"Gabriel," Amelia said softly, her voice steadying. "Put the gun down."

"Amelia, no," Gabriel growled, his finger tightening against the trigger. "We’re leaving. The plane is waiting."

"I’m not going with you," Amelia said, taking a clear, unhesitating step away from Gabriel and toward her husband. "You didn't save me, Gabriel. You just waited for him to make a mistake."

Gabriel’s eyes snapped with a sudden, tragic madness. "After eight years?!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the timber beams. "After eight years of standing in his shadow while he took everything?!"

He raised the weapon toward Luca’s head.

CRACK.

A single shot rang out—not from Gabriel’s weapon, but from the window behind him.

Gabriel stumbled forward, dropping the pistol onto the rug as a red stain bloomed across his shoulder. Two of Luca’s men rushed forward, pinning Gabriel to the floor, disarming him instantly before dragging him out into the freezing night.

The cabin fell silent again.

Luca didn't move. He stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving, his dark eyes searching Amelia’s face as if waiting for his final sentence.

"You left me in the rain," Amelia said, stopping three feet away from him, her voice quiet but filled with an immovable boundary.

"I know," Luca whispered, his voice cracking. "It was the worst mistake of my life."

"You lied to me for eight years," she continued, tears burning her eyes. "You thought you could buy my safety with silence."

"I was trying to keep the world from breaking you," Luca rasped, stepping closer, his heavy hands hovering near her arms, afraid to touch her without permission. "I didn't realize I was the one breaking you."

Amelia looked toward the bedroom door where Claire was sleeping safely, then back up at the granite man who had burned his entire empire down in four hours just to find her in the snow.

She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out the simple silver ring she had left in his safe, and held it out between them.

"No more lies, Luca," she said softly. "No more secrets. No more doors I’m not allowed to open."

Luca looked down at the ring, his hands trembling as he gently took it from her palm, sliding it back onto her finger with meticulous, reverent care before pulling her into his massive, warm embrace.

"No more secrets," Luca promised into her hair, holding her so tight the freezing night outside seemed to melt away entirely. "Never again."

And as the sunrise finally broke over the frozen pine ridge of Lake Geneva, painting the snow in shades of gold and rose, the shadow that had hung over them for eight long years vanished into the light.
