Chapter 9 - The Reckoning in the Snow

The high-beam headlights of three black SUVs cut through the blizzard outside, blinding the kitchen windows with pure white light.

Gabriel’s expression hardened instantly into cold violence. He pulled a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster, checking the action with a swift, practiced slide of his thumb.

"Stay behind me," Gabriel snapped, pushing Amelia toward the hallway. "He can't take you back."

The front door of the cabin didn't burst open; it was simply pushed inward as Luca Moretti walked through the frame. He wore no coat, only his dark suit, his white shirt stained with melted snow, his face pale and terrifyingly calm.

Behind him stood six armed men, their weapons lowered but ready.

Gabriel raised his pistol, aiming it directly at the center of Luca’s chest. "One more step, Luca, and I end eight years of taking your orders."

Luca didn't stop. He walked straight into the center of the living room, ignoring the barrel pointed at his heart, his dark eyes locked entirely on Amelia, who stood frozen near the bedroom door.

"Amelia," Luca said, his voice rough, raspy, and entirely stripped of his usual iron control. "Look at the desk behind him."

Amelia hesitated, her eyes flicking from Luca to Gabriel, then to the small oak writing desk in the corner of the room.

On the desk lay a set of legal documents bearing the official seal of the state of Wisconsin—not transfer papers for a safehouse, but institutional commitment records under Gabriel Vance’s private trust.

"He didn't bring you here to save your sister, Millie," Luca said softly, taking another slow step forward. "He brought you here because Hannah Reed was retiring, and he bought the facility. He’s been paying Claire’s medical bills for two years using my stolen funds—not to keep her safe from me, but to keep her as his own leverage over you."

Amelia turned to look at Gabriel, her heart dropping into a cold abyss. "Gabriel... is that true?"

Gabriel didn't lower the gun, but his jaw twitched violently. "He’s lying, Amelia! He’s trying to twist it! I kept her here so he couldn't use her!"

"I put Claire in that facility eight years ago because she was dying of acute trauma," Luca said, his voice shaking with a raw, painful truth. "I paid Hannah Reed out of my personal account because if the syndicate council knew your sister was alive, they would have used her to execute your father. I kept it from you because I was a coward, Amelia. Because I thought if you knew how broken your family's empire really was, you would leave me."
