Chapter 5 - The Eight-Year Siege

The silver Audi roared north along Interstate 94, cutting through the thick blizzard that had blanketed Northern Illinois.

Amelia sat in the passenger seat, holding the yellowed pages of Claire’s true file against her chest as if her own weight could keep them from disappearing. The heater hummed, but she couldn't stop shaking.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked, her voice crackling like dry leaves. "If you had this six years ago, Gabriel, why did you let me stay with him?"

Gabriel kept his eyes fixed on the white-out conditions ahead, his hands relaxed on the leather steering wheel.

"Because six years ago, Luca had total control of the syndicate," Gabriel said quietly. "If I had taken you then, he would have dragged you back within twelve hours, and he would have buried Claire somewhere no one would ever find her. I had to dismantle his safety nets one string at a time."

"You waited eight years?"

"I waited until tonight," Gabriel corrected softly, casting a brief, dark glance in her direction. "Tonight was the first time he let his guard down. He was so arrogant, so convinced that you would always be waiting under that awning, that he left you in the rain. He gave me the one window I needed."

"And Hannah Reed?" Amelia asked, her thumb tracing her sister's signature on a medical consent form dated three years prior.

"Hannah is a nurse," Gabriel explained. "When Claire escaped the accident ten years ago, she was severely traumatized. She didn't want to be found by her family—she was terrified of the people who had targeted your father. Luca found her first, paid Hannah to keep her in an unregistered private facility, and used her existence as ultimate leverage over your family's remaining assets."

Amelia closed her eyes, tears finally spilling over her lashes and hot down her cold cheeks. "He kept my sister in a cage so he could own my father's business."

"He kept her in a cage so he could own you," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a hard, metallic register. "He knew that as long as you were grieving, as long as you felt broken, you would lean on him. You were his sanctuary, Amelia. But he treated you like a prisoner."
