Chapter 7 - The House on the Ridge

The safehouse stood on a desolate pine ridge overlooking Lake Geneva, wrapped in two feet of fresh snow and surrounded by dense forest.
Gabriel pulled the Audi into the detached garage, killing the engine as the heavy wooden door shut behind them.
"We’re clear," he said, turning to look at Amelia. "She’s inside."
Amelia’s heart pounded so hard against her ribs it felt like a trapped bird. She pushed her door open, stepping onto the cold concrete floor, her legs trembling as Gabriel led her up a set of back stairs into a warmly lit, timber-framed living room.
A fire crackled in the wide stone hearth. Sitting in a wheelchair by the window, wrapped in a thick wool shawl, was a woman with pale skin and soft brown hair pulled back into a simple braid.
"Claire?" Amelia choked out, dropping her coat to the floor as she rushed across the room.
The woman turned her head slowly. Her eyes—the same pale hazel as Amelia’s—widened in shock, tears welling up almost instantly.
"Millie?" Claire’s voice was faint, raspy from years of disuse, but unmistakable.
Amelia fell to her knees beside the wheelchair, throwing her arms around her sister’s shoulders, burying her face into Claire’s neck as both of them sobbed uncontrollably. The eight years of silence, the frozen nights, the terrifying uncertainty—everything collapsed into the warm, real presence of her sister’s embrace.

Standing near the hallway door, Gabriel watched them, his hands tucked into his coat pockets, a small, triumphant smile hovering on his lips.
"You’re safe now," Gabriel whispered to the empty room. "Neither of you will ever have to answer to a Moretti again."
