Chapter 10 - THE MAID'S PROMISE

One month later.
The morning sun shone bright and crisp over the restored estate in Long Island.
The grand dining room was once again fully set for a formal gathering. The three crystal chandeliers glittered above the long twelve-foot table.
Twenty syndicate captains sat around the table in silence—men who controlled the city's ports, construction firms, and legal holdings.
At the head of the table sat Marcus Russo.
He was thinner, his face showing the lines of his ordeal, but his eyes were as cold and sharp as forged steel.
Beside him sat Julian Russo, wearing a dark suit, sitting in the primary chair reserved for the family underboss.
Uncle Carlo and Victor were nowhere to be seen—their names erased from the family registries forever.
Marcus raised his wine glass slightly. The entire room went dead silent instantly.
"The past month has shown us who can be trusted," Marcus spoke, his deep voice carrying through the quiet room without effort. "And who belongs in the ground."
The captains nodded solemnly, none of them daring to speak.
"My son Julian is now the official head of operations for the Russo syndicate," Marcus announced. "Any order from him is an order from me."
Marcus set his glass down, turning his head slightly toward the kitchen doors.
"And there is one final piece of business," Marcus said.
The heavy double doors opened.
Elena Carter walked into the grand dining room.
She was no longer wearing a black maid's apron. She wore an elegant, tailored charcoal-grey pant suit, her hair styled professionally, carrying a leather briefcase under her arm.
The captains glanced at each other in confusion, whispering among themselves.
Elena walked straight to the head of the table, stopping beside Marcus's chair. She opened her briefcase, pulling out a thick set of legal documents and laying them flat on the table.
"This is Elena Carter," Marcus introduced her to the room, his tone filled with absolute authority. "She is the new Chief Compliance Officer for all legal holdings of the Russo Corporation."
Elena looked around the table at the most dangerous men in the city. She didn't lower her eyes. She didn't look frightened.
"Every transaction, every pharmacy contract, every shipping supply chain across all five boroughs will go through Miss Carter's desk," Marcus continued, looking up at her with a rare, approving nod. "Because while the rest of you were looking at my power..."
Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a single, smooth white tablet—the identical cardiac medicine he took every day.
He held it up between his fingers for everyone in the room to see.
"...she was the only one who had the intelligence to notice the smallest difference."
Elena looked down at the pill, then at Julian, who smiled at her with quiet pride from across the table.
"My first rule, gentlemen," Elena said, her voice clear, confident, and echoing through the grand hall, "is very simple."
She rested her hands flat against the mahogany table, leaning in slightly toward the gathered bosses.

"Check your details. Because from now on... I'll be checking them for you."
The city's most feared men sat in absolute silence, nodding in agreement to the maid who had saved an empire.
