Chapter 6 - THE TWO BETRAYALS

Silence hung heavy in the small basement safehouse.

The ticking of a wall clock seemed deafening.

Julian sat motionless, staring at the blank laptop screen, his face drained of all color.

"She's going to kill him," Julian whispered, his hands forming tight fists on the desk. "She has his life support connected to an automated infusion pump."

Elena stood up, pacing across the small room. She pulled the folded paper note from her pocket—the note she had found beneath the dining room table on the night of the collapse.

TRUST NO ONE.

She held it up to the desk lamp, examining the paper closely under the light.

"Julian," Elena said suddenly. "Look at this paper."

Julian looked up, frowning. "It's just a scrap of paper."

"No," Elena said, pointing to the bottom corner. "Look at the watermark. It's a gold embossed crest. A leaf with a rising sun."

Julian's eyes widened. "That's the stationary from the lake house estate in Saratoga."

"This note wasn't dropped by Victor, or Mercer, or Victoria," Elena said, her mind working rapidly through every detail of that night. "It was already under the table before your father fell!"

"My father wrote it," Julian gasped, standing up. "He dropped it when his glass shattered!"

"He knew he was going to be poisoned that night," Elena insisted. "He knew someone at that table was going to make a move. That's why he looked at me when he fell. He wasn't just asking for help—he was pointing at the floor!"

Elena laid out the sequence of events in her mind like a puzzle.

"Think about it, Julian," Elena said, her voice growing sharp and confident. "Your father was tracking his medication for months. He knew Mercer was compromised. Why would a man as powerful and paranoid as Marcus Russo sit down at a dinner table and swallow a pill he knew was altered?"

Julian shook his head, confused. "Unless... unless he had already taken a neutralizing agent before dinner?"

"Or he wanted them to strike," Elena said. "He wanted whoever was poisoning him to reveal themselves in public, before all the family captains!"

"But he didn't expect Victoria to switch the bottle with a lethal dose that very night," Julian added, finishing her thought. "He expected a mild poison to fake a medical emergency, but Victoria escalated it to murder!"

Elena nodded eagerly. "Precisely! Your father's plan went wrong because there weren't one, but two betrayals happening at the same time!"

Julian walked over to the weapon cabinet in the corner of the safehouse, pulling out two tactical handguns and several spare magazines.

"Victor thinks he's taking the throne tomorrow morning at the family council meeting at the Grand Hotel," Julian said, loading a magazine into his pistol with a sharp, lethal click. "And Victoria thinks she's going to murder my father in his sleep and fly to Switzerland with two hundred million dollars."

He turned to look at Elena, his expression serious. "You've done more than enough, Elena. I can take it from here. I'll get you a fake passport and enough cash to leave the state."

Elena looked at the guns, then at Julian's grim face.

"I grew up in the South Side, Mr. Russo," Elena said, stepping toward him without flinching. "I've spent my whole life watching rich, powerful people treat normal people like trash they can throw away when things get messy. Dr. Mercer died tonight because he trusted these people. I'm not running away."

Julian looked at her for a long moment, a new sense of profound respect shining in his dark eyes.

"Alright," Julian said, handing her a small, lightweight concealed carry pistol. "Then let's go crash a family council."
