Chapter 9 - THE ICU SHOWDOWN

At 5:15 AM, a medical helicopter bearing no regional markings touched down quietly on the rooftop helipad of Saint Luke's Private Hospital in downtown Manhattan.
The hospital was a private, highly secretive medical facility owned by a syndicate-friendly foundation. The top floor had been completely cleared of civilian patients.
Elena wore a nurse's uniform she had acquired from the airfield medical locker, her hair tied back neatly, carrying a steel medical tray. Julian walked beside her, dressed in a doctor's white coat with a stethoscope around his neck.
They moved through the quiet, carpeted corridors of the ICU floor.
Two armed guards stood outside Room 704—Marcus Russo's private suite.
"Doctor's round," Julian said, keeping his head down as he approached the guards.
"No visitors or doctors allowed," the lead guard said, placing his hand against his holster. "Mrs. Russo gave strict orders—"
Before the guard could finish his sentence, Julian stepped forward and drove his elbow hard into the man's throat!
At the same second, Elena whipped the heavy steel medical tray across the second guard's face, sending him crashing into the wall! Julian grabbed the fallen guard's weapon and dragged both men into an empty linen closet.
Julian swiped the security keycard and pushed open the door to Room 704.
Inside, the room was dimly lit.
Victoria Russo stood beside Marcus's bed, holding an electronic tablet connected to the automated medication pump. She was dressed in an impeccable black suit, her hair perfectly styled, looking as calm as if she were attending a museum opening.
Lying on the bed, Marcus Russo's eyes were open.
He was paralyzed by the medication, unable to move his limbs, but his sharp, dark eyes were tracking his wife's every movement with burning intensity.
"You're late, Julian," Victoria said softly, without turning around. "It's twenty minutes past five."
"Step away from the pump, Victoria," Julian said, stepping into the room with his pistol raised.
Victoria slowly turned around. Her eyes drifted from Julian's gun to Elena standing beside him in her nurse's uniform.
"The maid," Victoria smiled faintly, a dark, bitter expression. "You really are persistent, aren't you, my dear? You could have had a quiet life cleaning houses. Now you're going to die in a hospital room."
"I know about the Morettis, Mrs. Russo," Elena said, stepping forward calmly. "I know you sold the family's shipping hubs for eighty million dollars. And I know Marcus set you up to take the fall with the federal prosecutors."
Victoria's smile vanished instantly. Her eyes flared with genuine rage.
"He treated me like an ornament for twelve years!" Victoria spat, pointing her finger at Marcus's silent form on the bed. "I built his social connections! I managed his public image! And he was going to throw me into a federal prison to save his own bloody reputation!"
"So you switched his cardiac medication," Julian said. "You used my uncle Victor as a scapegoat."
"Victor is an idiot who thinks with his fists," Victoria said, raising her thumb over a red button on her electronic tablet. "One tap on this screen, and twenty milligrams of potassium chloride will enter your father's IV line. He will be dead in four seconds."
"If you press that button," Julian said, holding his gun steady at her forehead, "I will put a bullet through your heart before you can take another breath."
"Will you, Julian?" Victoria taunted him, a cruel smile touching her lips. "You're a soft boy. You read books. You went to law school. You've never shot a human being in your entire—"
BANG!
A gunshot echoed through the room!
Victoria's eyes widened in shock. The electronic tablet slipped from her hands, crashing against the floor.
She looked down at her chest, where a dark crimson stain was spreading rapidly across her black silk blouse.
She stumbled backward, collapsing against the window pane before sliding down to the carpet, lifeless.
Julian stood frozen, his gun still raised, smoke curling from the barrel. His hands were shaking violently.
Elena immediately rushed to the bedside, looking down at the automated medication pump. She quickly disconnected the IV line from Marcus's arm, stopping the lethal infusion.
Lying on the bed, Marcus Russo took a deep, ragged breath as the paralyzing effect of the initial toxin began to wear off.
His fingers twitched.
Slowly, painfully, Marcus raised his hand. He didn't reach for his son.
He reached out and touched Elena's sleeve.

His dark eyes, filled with profound authority and newfound gratitude, looked straight into hers.
"Thank you... Elena," Marcus whispered, his voice weak but clear.
