Chapter 10 - Light in the Shadows

Two years later, a quiet morning broke over the green hills of Chester County.

The farmhouse porch was bathed in golden morning light. The air smelled of sweet clover, damp earth, and brewing coffee.

Maeve sat on the wooden porch swing, wrapped in a comfortable knit blanket, holding a warm mug of coffee in her hands. Beside her on the swing lay Argos, his head resting comfortably across her lap, his scarred face relaxed in complete, absolute peace.

Walking out through the screen door was Dante, carrying his own mug, dressed in a soft cotton shirt and jeans. He sat down on the swing beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side.

Across the front lawn, a young three-year-old rescue Cane Corso—a pup saved from an illegal breeding ring six months ago—was chasing a yellow tennis ball through the tall grass, barking happily in the sunshine.

Argos opened his clouded eyes, listening to the puppy's joyful barks, his ears perking up with quiet, paternal affection, his tail giving a slow thud against the wooden porch floorboards.

"What are you thinking about?" Maeve asked softly, leaning her head against Dante’s chest.

Dante looked out over his land—the thriving hospital, the green pastures, his happy wife, and the blind dog who had brought them all together.

"I was thinking about the old trigger phrase," Dante admitted quietly, his voice filled with deep, serene peace.

Maeve tilted her head up to look at him. "In umbra spes?"

"Yes," Dante whispered, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips. "Hope in the shadow. I used to think it was just a warning about danger in the dark. But now I know what it really means."

He reached down, gently stroking Argos’s soft black ears, while holding Maeve’s hand tightly in his own.

"It means that no matter how deep the shadows are," Dante said softly, "if you have the courage to look, you will always find the light."

And there, under the bright morning sun, with the puppy barking happily in the grass and the blind war dog sleeping peacefully at their feet, the shadows were gone forever.
