Chapter 7 - Healing Ground

Six months later, the sun was warm over Chester County.
Where the old, cramped parking lot of Hart Veterinary Rehabilitation had once stood, a massive, state-of-the-art canine physical therapy center now spanned two acres of lush green land.
The Argos Center for Animal Recovery featured outdoor agility parks designed specifically for sight-impaired animals, indoor hydrotherapy pools, and a dedicated neurological research lab studying trauma recovery in working dogs.
On a warm Tuesday evening, the double glass doors of the clinic slid open.
Dante Caruso stepped inside. He wore a simple navy-blue polo shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed, younger, and completely free of the dark, heavy weight he had carried for years. In his hand, he carried a large insulated tote bag filled with high-grade organic cuts from a local butcher.
In the center of the sunlit reception area, lying on a thick orthopedic bed, was Argos.
His coat had fully healed, sleek, thick, and black as night once more. Though the pale scars around his eyes remained, his posture was peaceful, relaxed, and deeply content.
The moment Dante stepped through the door, Argos’s ears rotated toward him. His tail began a heavy, rhythmic thumping against the floor.
"Hey, old boy," Dante said softly, kneeling down on the floor beside the bed and setting the bag down. He rubbed the dog's thick neck, letting Argos sniff his hands.
Maeve stepped out from her office, wearing a clean white lab coat over a blue scrub top, her dark hair tied back in a loose braid. A warm, radiant smile lit up her face the moment she saw Dante.
"You're late," she teased, walking over and leaning against the reception counter. "It's five-fifteen. Chef Dante is usually here at five sharp."
"Traffic on the Turnpike," Dante replied with a quiet smile, standing up to face her. He reached out, gently taking her hand across the counter and pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles. "How was your day, Dr. Hart?"
"We discharged three recovering surgical patients today," Maeve said, her eyes shining with pride. "And the state veterinary board just approved our grant for blind service dog rehabilitation."
"I know," Dante said softly. "I saw the press release."
"Did you have something to do with that grant?" Maeve asked, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.
Dante raised his hands in mock innocence. "I am simply a retired businessman who sits on the board of trustees, Maeve. I have no control over state funding."
Maeve laughed—a light, musical sound that filled the bright reception area.

Over the past six months, the dangerous mob boss who had walked into her clinic on a stormy night had transformed into her closest companion, her biggest supporter, and the man who had quietly stolen her heart.
Dante had stepped down from active management of his organization, handing the legitimate logistics firms over to a trust managed by his loyal captains, devoting his time and resources entirely to the foundation he and Maeve had built together.
