Chapter 9 - The Final Command

A year after the night of the blizzard, Hart Veterinary Rehabilitation hosted its annual summer gala on the front lawn of the estate.
Over two hundred guests attended—local community leaders, veterinarians, animal welfare advocates, and several retired police officers whose working dogs had been saved by Maeve’s clinic.
String lights hung from the branches of the ancient oak trees, casting a warm, magical glow over the lawn. A jazz quartet played soft music near the pavilion, and guests laughed, sipping champagne and enjoying the warm summer night.
Maeve stood near the edge of the lawn, wearing a stunning dark navy evening gown that complemented her dark eyes. Beside her, Argos walked without a leash, moving through the crowd with absolute confidence and ease, navigating by the sound of voices and the soft rustle of clothing.
Guests paused as the giant black dog passed by, gently reaching down to stroke his coat. Argos leaned into their touches, his tail wagging happily, completely at ease among the crowd.
Dante stepped up beside Maeve, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to her, his eyes warm with pride.
"He's a celebrity," Dante smiled, watching Argos greet a group of young veterinary students near the fountain.
"He's a teacher," Maeve corrected softly, looking up at Dante. "He showed all of us that no matter how deep the scars are, no matter how dark the past was, love can rewrite any story."
Dante looked down at her, setting his glass down on a nearby high-top table. He took both of her hands in his, stepping into her space under the glowing string lights.
"Maeve," Dante said softly, his voice trembling slightly with an emotion he no longer tried to hide.
She looked into his eyes, her heart beating fast and sweet. "Yes, Dante?"
Dante reached into his pocket.
For a second, Maeve’s breath caught—not in fear, but in sudden, overwhelming anticipation.
Dante didn't pull out a watch or a gun.
He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a magnificent, cushion-cut emerald ring surrounded by delicate platinum bands that glistened like stars under the evening lights.
"You gave me back my soul, Maeve," Dante whispered, kneeling down on one knee on the soft grass, looking up into her tear-filled eyes. "You healed my dog, you transformed my world, and you showed me what it means to truly live. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"
The crowd around them fell quiet, guests turning their heads to watch the scene unfolding under the oak trees.
Argos walked over slowly, standing right beside Dante, leaning his heavy head against Maeve’s knee as if giving his own silent approval.
Maeve wept tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She dropped to her knees right beside Dante on the soft grass, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

"Yes!" she sobbed happily against his neck. "Yes, Dante! Yes!"
Dante laughed with deep, joyful warmth, pulling her close, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss as the crowd erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause under the starry summer night.
