Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Echo

Later that evening, after the clinic had closed and the sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep purples and golds, Maeve and Dante sat on the rear wooden deck of her farmhouse adjoining the clinic property.
Argos lay between their chairs, sleeping peacefully in the warm evening breeze, his chest rising and falling in deep, rhythmic quiet.
Dante held a glass of red wine, looking out over the quiet pastures where two recovering horses walked along the fence line.
"I received a letter from South America today," Dante said quietly, his tone turning reflective.
Maeve turned her head to look at him. "Julian?"
"Yes," Dante nodded softly. "He's running the grain facility in Paraguay. His manager says he's working twelve-hour days, quiet, subdued. He asked if he could send a donation to the rehab center here."
Maeve fell silent for a moment, her fingers tracing the rim of her wine glass. "Do you think people can really change, Dante?"
Dante looked at her, his dark gray eyes holding hers in the twilight. He reached out, taking her hand in his, his thumb gently caressing her skin.
"I know they can," Dante whispered softly. "Because six months ago, I was a man who believed power was the only thing that mattered in this world. I thought coldness was the only way to protect what was mine."
He looked down at the blind dog sleeping at their feet, then back up at Maeve.

"And then a brilliant, fierce veterinarian stood in front of my gun, protected a dying dog, and showed me that true strength isn't about destroying your enemies," Dante continued, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "It's about having the courage to heal."
Maeve felt tears of warm happiness touch her eyes. She leaned over from her chair, resting her head gently against Dante’s shoulder. He wrapped his strong arm around her, pulling her close as the first stars began to twinkle in the clear evening sky.
