Chapter 10 - The Unseen Shield

One year later.
The digital clock above the central nurses’ station at Mercy General Hospital read 3:14 a.m.
Khloe Dempsey stood behind the laminate counter, reviewing an electronic chart on a tablet. She wore crisp dark blue scrubs, her hair pulled back into a neat ponytail.
Over the past twelve months, her life had transformed completely. Her debt was entirely gone, allowing her to breath easily for the first time in her adult life. She had been promoted to Charge Nurse of the Emergency Department, recognized for her incredible composure under pressure and her exceptional surgical support skills.
Yet, subtle changes in her world reminded her every day of the man who ruled the shadows of Chicago.
Mercy General had suddenly received a massive, multi-million-dollar private donation from an anonymous benefactor, allowing the hospital to build a state-of-the-art trauma bay, hire extra security, and offer completely free garage parking for all night-shift employees.
Her battered Honda Civic had been replaced by a brand-new, top-safety-rated Volvo sedan that had "mysteriously" won in a hospital raffle she didn't even remember entering.
And every night when she walked to her car, no matter how late or dark the street was, a quiet black SUV sat idling two blocks away, keeping a silent, watchful protective eye over her until she drove away safely.
"Khloe! We got an incoming!"
Sarah, now her assistant charge nurse, called out as the emergency department doors burst open.
A paramedic team rushed through the double doors, pushing a gurney bearing a young victim of a robbery that had gone wrong down near the docks.
"Eighteen-year-old male, gunshot wound to the upper thigh!" the paramedic yelled over the noise. "Severe arterial bleeding! BP dropping!"
Khloe didn't hesitate for a second. She stepped forward, her movement confident, steady, and utterly calm. "Move him to Trauma Bay 1! Get two lines of normal saline running! Prep the suture kit and vascular clamps now!"
As she wheeled the gurney down the bright corridor, her hand briefly went to her neck, her fingers lightly touching the silver capital R pendant tucked safely beneath her scrub top.
She had never seen Dominic Russo in person again after the morning she left his penthouse.
Yet he was everywhere. He was the unseen shield guarding her life, the silent shadow over Chicago that ensured she could walk through the darkest streets without fear.
She was a nurse dedicated to saving lives in the light of day. He was a king who ruled the violent shadows of the night.

They lived in two entirely different worlds, separated by law, morality, and blood. But bound together by a rainy night on Halsted Street, a bullet removed on a kitchen table, and a promise that would last a lifetime.
Khloe pulled on her surgical gloves, picked up the scalpel under the bright lights of the trauma bay, and began to work.
