Chapter 9 - The Return to the World

The morning sun broke over Chicago with brilliant, clear light. The rain clouds were gone, replaced by a crisp November sky that illuminated the glass towers of the city.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb outside the renovated apartment building in Pilsen.
Khloe stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a simple wool coat and jeans. The exterior staircase looked clean, the front entry door was brand new with high-end electronic locks installed, and the quiet neighborhood seemed completely peaceful, as if the violent night two weeks ago had been erased from reality.
Dominic’s driver, a polite middle-aged man named Marco, retrieved her leather bag from the trunk and set it near the steps.
"Mr. Russo assured me that your apartment has been fully restored to its original state, Miss Dempsey," Marco said with a respectful bow. "And your rent has been prepaid for the next ten years."
"Ten years?" Khloe gasped. "He didn't have to—"
"Mr. Russo does what he feels is appropriate," Marco smiled softly. "Have a good day, Miss Dempsey."
Khloe stood on the pavement as the luxury car pulled away, leaving her alone on the quiet street of Pilsen.
She walked up the wooden stairs, used her new key to open her apartment door, and stepped inside.
The apartment was immaculate. The broken door frame was replaced with solid steel-reinforced oak, the kitchen table she had scrubbed with bleach was gone, replaced by a beautiful, handcrafted antique pine dining table that looked identical to her old one, but far finer. Her books, her plants, and her clothes were all organized perfectly.
It felt like her home, yet it felt entirely different.
Khloe walked into her bedroom. She knelt down, reached beneath her bed, and pulled up the loose floorboards.
The fifty thousand dollars in cash was gone.
In its place sat a single, small velvet jewelry box, along with a handwritten note written in precise, elegant calligraphy.
She picked up the note first.
Khloe,
I have removed the cash, as I know your pride would never allow you to spend it. In its place, I have paid off your nursing school debt directly through a private charitable trust. You are completely free of burden.
The enclosed item belongs to you. It is a symbol of my eternal protection. No matter where you go in this city, no matter what hour of the day or night, if you ever find yourself in danger or in need of help, show this to anyone on the street who knows my name.
You saved my life, little nurse. My city is yours.
— D.R.
Khloe opened the velvet box.
Resting on the black silk interior was a exquisite sterling silver pendant hanging from a fine platinum chain. The pendant was a highly detailed, miniature engraving of a Gothic capital R, surrounded by silver thorned vines—identical to the crest on the Zippo lighter.

Khloe pulled the heavy pendant from the box, holding it up to the morning sunlight streaming through her window. The silver caught the light, gleaming brightly.
She slowly fastened the chain around her neck, feeling the cool metal rest directly over her heart.
