Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

The drive through Chicago in the back of Dominic Russo’s armored Mercedes sedan felt like a dream induced by shock.
Khloe sat huddled against the plush leather seat, wrapping her arms around herself to stop her shivering. Beside her, Dominic sat in silence, scrolling through an encrypted satellite phone while issuing sharp, quiet commands in Italian to the driver. Outside the tinted glass windows, the city lights blurred past—a world she no longer belonged to.
They crossed the bridge into Gold Coast, one of Chicago’s most exclusive and expensive neighborhoods. The sedan turned off the main avenue and pulled into a private, underground residential garage protected by heavy steel blast gates and round-the-clock security guards carrying submachine guns under their long coats.
The elevator inside the garage went directly to the top floor, opening into a breathtaking, two-story penthouse penthouse that looked out over Lake Michigan.
It was a glass fortress. Floor-to-ceiling reinforced windows offered a sweeping panorama of the dark, shimmering lake and the city skyline. The interior was decorated in minimalist luxury—dark hardwood floors, cream leather furniture, custom marble countertops, and modern art pieces worth millions.
"Welcome to my home," Dominic said, stepping out of the elevator and removing his heavy wool coat. A waiting butler instantly stepped forward to take it. "You will be safe here. My security detail mans this building twenty-four hours a day. The glass is missile-resistant, and the elevator requires my personal biometric clearance."
Khloe stood near the entrance, refusing to walk further into the luxurious space. "Safe?" she laughed bitterly, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "Safe? Dominic, two men were just murdered in my hallway! My apartment is ruined! My life is over! I have a job at Mercy General! I have patients! I have an entire existence that doesn't involve gunfights and mob wars!"
Dominic turned slowly to face her. His expression remained entirely unreadable, but his amber eyes softened slightly as he absorbed her distress.
"Your old life was over the second you pulled that 9mm round out of my side, Khloe," he said quietly. "I wish I could give it back to you, but I cannot. The men who came to your door tonight were sent by Marcus Vance—a former lieutenant of mine who attempted to assassinate me two weeks ago."
Khloe gasped. "Vance? Like... Dr. Vance?"
"Mark Vance is Marcus Vance’s younger brother," Dominic revealed, taking a slow step toward her. "The surgeon you work with at the hospital. He’s been feeding information regarding the emergency department to his brother's network for months. That is how they tracked you."
The realization hit Khloe like a bucket of ice water. The arrogant resident doctor she had worked alongside every night was part of the organization that had just sent hitmen to her home. The world she thought she knew was entirely fake.
"What am I supposed to do now?" she asked softly, tears finally overflowing her eyes and spilling down her cheeks. "I'm a prisoner here?"
"You are my guest," Dominic corrected firmly. "You will have anything you desire. Clothes, food, luxury, medical supplies—whatever you ask for will be provided. But you will not leave this apartment until Marcus Vance and his inner circle are completely eliminated."
He walked closer, stopping just inches from her. He reached out with a long, finger and gently caught one of her falling tears, wiping it away. The contrast between his lethal nature and his gentle handling of her was dizzying.
"You saved my life when you had every reason to leave me to die in that alley," Dominic whispered, his voice deep and dark. "In my world, debt is paid in blood and loyalty. I owe you my life, Khloe Dempsey. And Dominic Russo always pays his debts."
He turned to a middle-aged woman in a crisp gray uniform who had stepped out from the hallway. "Elena, show Miss Dempsey to the master guest suite. Ensure she has warm food and clean clothing. Call my personal physician to inspect her for any injuries."
"Yes, Mr. Russo," the woman replied respectfully.
Khloe allowed herself to be led down a long, dimly lit corridor lined with modern paintings. Elena opened a set of double doors into a massive master bedroom suite that rivaled the finest hotels in Paris. It featured a king-sized bed wrapped in silk sheets, a fireplace, a private terrace overlooking the lake, and a massive marble bathroom featuring a deep soaking tub.
On the bed lay several bags from high-end boutiques on Michigan Avenue—expensive cashmere sweaters, silk pajamas, dark tailored trousers, and leather boots, all precisely in her size.
"Mr. Russo had these brought up earlier today," Elena explained kindly. "He anticipated your arrival."

Khloe sat down heavily on the edge of the plush bed. She looked at the luxury surrounding her, feeling entirely hollow inside. Just twelve hours ago, she was worrying about whether she could afford a five-dollar coffee from the hospital cafeteria. Now, she was locked inside a golden cage owned by the king of Chicago’s underworld.
She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and pressed her forehead against the cool glass. Down below, miles away, the dark waters of Lake Michigan crashed violently against the concrete barriers of the city shore—a storm brewing, matching the war raging outside her window.
