Chapter 4 - Shadow over Pilsen

Two weeks passed, but the terror never truly left Khloe.

She lived her life in a state of hyper-vigilance. Every black sedan with tinted windows that slowed down near her street made her freeze on the sidewalk. Every time she unlocked her apartment door, she half-expected to find armed men waiting in the dark to eliminate the only witness who knew Dominic Russo was still breathing.

Chicago was in chaos. You couldn't turn on the local news without hearing about the "Underworld Power Vacuum."

With Dominic Russo missing and presumed dead by the authorities, rival factions were moving in on his territory. Nightly shootings were reported in the West Loop and River North. The police department set up extra patrols across the city, but everyone on the streets knew the truth: until the Russo Syndicate confirmed whether their leader was dead or alive, the city was a powder keg waiting for a spark.

Khloe tried to sink into the background of her daily life. She worked sixteen-hour shifts, scrubbed floors, administered medications, and ignored the fifty thousand dollars sitting beneath the floorboards of her bedroom. She hadn't spent a single penny of it. Touching the money felt like sealing a contract with the devil.

It was a cold Tuesday evening when the fragile illusion of her safety finally shattered.

Khloe finished her shift at 8:00 p.m. The rain had cleared, replaced by a biting November wind that swept dry leaves along the pavement. She walked to her car—parked four blocks away this time—got in, and drove back to her apartment in Pilsen.

As she pulled up to her building, she noticed something unusual.

A sleek, midnight-black SUV with dark tinted windows was parked across the street, idling quietly in the red zone. Its headlights were off, but a faint wispy plume of exhaust rose from its tailpipe into the cold air.

Khloe’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. Her pulse spiked. She forced herself to park normally, step out of her Civic, and walk toward the building’s entrance with an air of casual indifference.

She unlocked the heavy front door, stepped into the dimly lit hallway, and began climbing the creaking wooden stairs to the second floor.

When she reached her landing, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The heavy, reinforced oak door to her apartment was slightly ajar. The brass strike plate was bent, and the wood around the deadbolt showed deep, fresh splinter marks. Someone had forced the door open.

Khloe took a instinctual step back toward the stairs, her heart hammering wildly in her chest.

"Looking for someone, sweetheart?"

A thick, gravelly voice echoed from inside her apartment.

Before Khloe could turn to run down the flight of stairs, a large man stepped out from her doorway, blocking her path. He was tall, heavily built, and wore a leather bomber jacket. His face was scarred, his nose crooked, and his eyes were cold and predatory.

He didn't look like a police officer.

"Khloe Dempsey, right?" the man sneered, taking a step toward her. "The little nurse who works the night shift at Mercy General."

"Who are you?" Khloe demanded, her voice shaking despite her efforts to stay strong. "Get out of my apartment, or I'm screaming for help!"

The man chuckled—a dry, terrifying sound. "Scream all you want. Nobody in this building is coming up these stairs to save you."

He stepped closer, reaching out to grip her arm. Instinct took over; Khloe swung her heavy canvas work bag with all her strength, striking him full in the face. The buckle caught him across the cheekbone, snapping his head back.

"You little bitch!" he roared, grabbing his face.

Khloe turned and sprinted down the hallway toward the rear fire escape, but a second man stepped out from the shadows near the back stairs. He grabbed her by her hair, slamming her back against the hallway wall with sickening force.

The air rushed out of her lungs. Her vision swam with bright flashes of light.

"Hold her!" the first man ordered, wiping a trickle of blood from his cheek as he approached her. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy metal pipe. "We know Russo came through here two weeks ago. We tracked his blood trail to the alley, and we found a witness who saw a girl matching your description loading a wounded guy into a beat-up Honda."

He leaned in close, his breath foul with tobacco and alcohol. "Where is he? Where’s Dominic hiding?"

"I don't know!" Khloe sobbed, gasping for air against the wall. "I don't know who you're talking about! A guy threatened me with a gun, I cleaned his wound, and he left before morning! He vanished! I swear to God!"

"Lie!" the man barked, raising the metal pipe. "Dominic doesn't survive a 9mm to the gut without help. If he’s alive, you know where he is. Tell me, or I'm breaking your legs right here."

Khloe closed her eyes, squeezing them shut as she prepared for the blow. She had saved a man’s life, and now she was going to die on the floor of her own hallway for a war she had never asked to join.

CRACK.

The sound was not the metal pipe hitting her bones, but the deafening roar of a heavy gunshot echoing through the narrow stairwell.

The man holding the pipe froze. A look of sheer shock washed over his face as he looked down at a neat, dark hole that had suddenly appeared in the center of his chest. He staggered backward, dropped the pipe, and collapsed hard onto the floorboard.

The second man holding Khloe gasped, releasing his grip on her hair as he scrambled to pull a weapon from his belt.

THUD. THUD.

Two more shots rang out in rapid succession, muffled by a suppressor. The second attacker collapsed without a sound, falling sideways onto the staircase landing.

Khloe slid down the wall, her knees giving out completely as she cowered on the floor, her hands covering her head, her body trembling violently.

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the hallway. They didn't hurry. They moved with absolute, terrifying calm.

A pair of expensive, hand-crafted leather shoes stopped directly in front of her.

"I believe," a familiar, deep, velvet-smooth voice said above her, "that these gentlemen were being exceedingly rude."

Khloe slowly raised her head, her breath catching in her throat.

Standing over her, dressed in an immaculate, dark navy three-piece suit, was Dominic Russo.

He looked completely restored. The deadly pallor was gone from his face, replaced by healthy color and a cold, lethal authority. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his amber eyes shone in the dim lighting of the hallway like polished gemstones.

Positioned behind him were four towering men in identical dark suits, holding suppressed firearms pressed low against their sides.

Dominic offered his hand down to her.

"Are you harmed, Khloe?" he asked softly.

Khloe stared at his outstretched hand, terrified, overwhelmed, and unable to move. "You... you killed them."

Dominic looked down at the two bodies on her floor without a single flicker of emotion. "They were trash working for a man who thought he could take what belongs to me. They were a threat to you because of my oversight."

He crouched down until he was at eye level with her, his amber gaze holding hers. The aura of danger radiating from him was palpable, yet his touch was surprisingly gentle as he reached out and softly touched her bruised cheek where she had hit the wall.

"You saved my life on your kitchen table, little nurse," Dominic said softly. "I do not allow people who belong under my protection to be harmed."

He stood up, looking at the lead bodyguard standing behind him. "Clean this up. Burn the building's security drives if there are any. And bring her car."

"Wait!" Khloe stammered, pulling back as two of his men stepped forward to help her up. "What are you doing? I can't leave! My apartment—"

May you like

"Your apartment is compromised," Dominic interrupted smoothly, offering her no room for argument. "Rival factions know who you are. The police will be here in minutes. If you stay here, you will either be interrogated by detectives or executed by my enemies."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a low, commanding whisper. "You are coming with me, Khloe. It is the only place in this city where you will stay alive."
