Chapter 3 - THE BALLROOM OF SNAKES

The double mahogany doors of the Bellmont Ballroom swung open, and the roaring chatter of three hundred high-society guests dissolved into a stunned, collective hush.
Adrian Moretti stepped through the doorway, his chest broad, his posture majestic and dark. But it wasn't Adrian that held the room's collective breath.
It was the man walking beside him.
Julian Vance walked shoulder-to-shoulder with Adrian, his arm lightly brushed against the mafia boss's sleeve. Julian carried himself with an effortless, icy elegance that matched Adrian’s dark shadow.
Gasps rippled through the front tables where local politicians and mob lieutenants sat.
"Is that... Julian Vance?" whispered a senior underboss from the Falcone crime syndicate. "I thought the Vances were wiped out years ago!"
"Where is Isabelle?" Senator Hayes murmured to his wife, his fork hovering above his plate. "What is going on up there?"
Adrian led Julian directly to the center platform under the massive chandelier. The spot where a traditional bride and groom were supposed to toast their future.
Elena followed closely behind, taking her seat at the head table, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Adrian stepped up to the microphone, his hand resting casually on the small of Julian's back—a gesture that looked intentionally protective to the crowd, though Julian could feel the intense, warning pressure of Adrian’s palm.
"Good evening, everyone," Adrian’s voice echoed smoothly across the ballroom. "I know many of you arrived tonight expecting a traditional announcement."
A quiet murmur ran through the room.
"However," Adrian continued, his dark eyes scanning the crowd until they locked onto Don Falcone—an elderly man in a velvet tuxedo sitting in the corner with three heavy-set guards behind him—"the Moretti family has never been known for tradition."
Adrian paused, turning slightly to look into Julian's eyes. Julian met his gaze without blinking, playing his part with flawless, stoic precision.
"Tonight," Adrian announced, "we celebrate a coalition far greater than a political alliance. The return of the Vance family to Brooklyn... and my commitment to Julian Vance."
The room erupted into a chaos of whispered conversations, camera flashes, and clinking silverware.
At the Falcone table, Don Falcone’s eyes narrowed into slits. He slowly set his wine glass down, leaning over to his chief enforcer.
"Find out what Vance is doing back in the city," Falcone rasped quietly. "If the Morettis and Vances have merged their networks, our takeover at the docks is dead."
On stage, Adrian leaned down, his lips brushing near Julian’s ear as if whispering a tender romantic secret.
"You're doing surprisingly well, Vance," Adrian murmured under his breath, his voice barely audible over the noise of the room. "Where did you learn to fake devotion so convincingly?"
"I spent six years working undercover in state intelligence, Moretti," Julian whispered back without breaking his calm, pleasant smile toward the crowd. "I've lied to men far more dangerous than you."

"Is that a challenge?" Adrian murmured, his grip tightening subtly on Julian's side.
"It's a fact," Julian replied softly. "Now smile for the photographer, fiancé. Your enemies are watching."
